Fall Trustee Education Series

The MHLS Trustee Education Series has been designed using the Helping All Trustees Succeed (HATS) Curriculum.
HATS was created thanks to a collaboration of key players in the New York library community: The State Library, the Library Trustee Association of New York (LTA), the New York Library Association (NYLA) and the Public Library Systems Directors Organization (PULISDO), were joined by hundreds of trustees and library directors from around New York State to help shape the content.

Association an overview of the OverDrive Marketplace
Nina Acosta, Assistant ILP Operations Supervisor has been providing an orientation of the OverDrive Marketplace
for each county within the MHLS service area. Nina demonstrated some of the reports and features that are available, and showed participants where to find policies, statistics, and additional support and training materials.

As part of their summer reading program, the Hurley Library and West Hurley Public Library teamed up with the Town of Hurley to bus patrons to the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) in Queens, NY. 78 patrons traveled to NYSCI on two buses. Kristen Campbell, director of the Hurley Library said, "NYSCI even featured an exhibit about women in space and a movie about the Apollo Moon landing which fit in perfectly with the summer reading program!" Their patrons had a great time at the museum which features over 450 events, exhibits, and workshops.

Two dates available for Sierra Hands-on Create Lists - Level 2.
In this hands-on workshop, presented by Thomas O'Connell, MHLS ILP Operations Supervisor, attendees will generate Create Lists reports incorporating advanced features to fine tune their search queries.
This workshop is designed for people who are regular users of Sierra Create Lists and are familiar with creating and running basic reports. At this event we will cover:
- How to build advanced Queries for Create Lists
- Getting specific with your search to find the data you need
- Identifying 'problem' records to clean up the catalog
- What information can be accessed with Create Lists

Hudson Valley communities and organizations are joining forces to promote and take part
in Climate Week 2019, from September 23-29, a global educational event
. This year, Sustainable Hudson Valley and the Hudson Valley Climate Solutions Network are promoting a high profile, action-oriented program with support from the
New York Library Association's Sustainability Thinking and Action Round Table
. A speaker's bureau has been created and is available to support community organizations, schools, workplaces, houses of worship and municipalities throughout the Hudson Valley in organizing events that focus on actions we can all take now. There is still time to register for the MHLS Leadership Circle will meet on Friday, September 6th after the DA meeting to discuss Leading Meetings that Matter. Your time and the time of your stakeholders is one of the most valuable assets you have to create a relevant and responsive library. This workshop will provide an overview of strategies for conducting efficient and effective meetings and making the best use of the "people power" available to help your library meet its goals. Library directors will develop skills for planning and organizing meetings and facilitating discussions at meetings.
At this workshop we will cover:
- Best practices for structuring and running an effective meeting
- Facilitation and discussion skills for library leaders

Library Director, Saugerties Public Library
The Saugerties Public Library seeks enthusiastic qualified applicants for the position of Library Director. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) offering a competitive salary, health benefits, and enrollment in the New York State Local Retirement System. The Library Director shall be the executive and administrative officer of the library, acting on behalf of the Board and under it's review and direction. The Library Director or his/her designee is the official spokesperson for the library
The Library Director
oversees all aspects of library administration and operations including library finances, information systems and technology, buildings and grounds maintenance, human resources, library programs, collection development, public relations, and community outreach.
The Saugerties Public Library is a vibrant community resource serving a population of 19,192 residents in the Town and Village of Saugerties, and is a member of the Mid-Hudson Library System. This is a civil service position and applicants must possess the minimum qualifications for Library Director 1 in order to apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans and implements library programs for patrons of all ages.
- Develops the library budget in coordination with the Finance Committee.
- Prepares, distributes, and compiles all materials for board and committee meetings.
- Maintains all business, financial, and personnel records for the library including filing all personnel actions with Ulster County Civil Service.
- Assumes responsibility for the maintenance of computers and the automation system.
- Applies for and administers grants.
- Administers the expenditures of library funds and the collection of library revenues.
- Recommends new services, policies, and personnel actions to the Board of Trustees.
- Recommends appointments, transfers, promotions and dismissals.
- Supervises the work of library employees.
- Conducts staff training meetings.
- Performs annual performance evaluations on all employees.
- Administers the purchase of library materials.
- Prepares state, local, and other statistical narrative reports as needed or required.
- Oversees collection development.
- Assumes responsibility for the development and maintenance of the local history collection.
- Creates relevant reports through the library systems ILS.
- Conducts studies and analysis of library operations.
- Oversees cash handling.
- Ensure that the building and grounds are properly maintained.
- Designs and produces public relations and library instruction materials.
- Represents the library before governmental agencies and community groups.
- Supervises the maintenance of library property and recommends repairs, alterations, and new construction.
- Keeps informed of professional developments through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, continuing education courses, and reading professional materials.
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous experience in library management.
High proficiency with library computer technology and electronic resources.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
Experience working with volunteers and Friends group and a Board of Trustees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Masters Degree in Library Science and two (2) years of professional full-time, or its' part-time equivalent, experience in a library of recognized standing.
Special Requirement: Possession of a New York State Public Librarian's professional certificate at time of appointment.
