The annual White Coat Ceremony, held August 16 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, featured 346 students i
n Optometry, Audiology, Physician Assistant Studies, Occupational Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology
who received the symbol of their professions – the white coat. It is tangible proof that the students have truly begun their professional journey.
The keynote speaker was Michael Cowan, MD, FACP, RADM, USN (Retired), the 34
th
Surgeon General of the U.S. Navy, and a mentor for Dr. Mittelman, who served as Dr. Cowan’s executive assistant in the Navy for many years.
Dr. Cowan delivered an entertaining, yet poignant message to the students, emphasizing something that Salus has front and center in its mission: patient-centeredness. “If you ever think of doing something and it’s not in the best interest of patients, the you’re doing it wrong and you might want to rethink it,” said Dr. Cowan.

Last week, our newest students enjoyed an eventful Orientation Week as a way to prepare them for their new life at Salus!
New this year for Orientation was a student lounge in the Hafter Student Community Center gymnasium, which gave new students a chance to meet others, play some games, have their caricature drawn and hear from student council representatives and student ambassadors. “We wanted a place for students to just hang out and relax before they go off into the specific orientations in the afternoon,” said Monica Maisto, director of Admissions at the University. “A place for them to mingle and have fun.”

“This is a component of our physical diagnosis course where the students learn physical exam techniques. So before they go out to their clinical year, we put on a workshop to expose them to the pediatric population,” said Adam Moore, ATC, MHS, PA-C, assistant professor in the PA program.

What are some of your favorite memories from Salus/PCO – favorite classes, professors, classmates, clinical experiences, co-workers?
I had a great module; we shared challenging cases but also had a lot of fun. Some of my favorite people were classmates whom I still see at the national meetings - Carey and Gene Shifin, Michele (Pawloski) Maiers, Jess (Potter) and Chris Udina, Mike Higgins, Nicole (Lemoncelli) Doherty, Stacy (Jesse) Conway to name a few.
