The mission of Trinity Church is to share Christ's love and grace in a vibrant community whose joyful spirit empowers people to do God's work.

SENIOR WARDEN'S NOTES
It keeps coming home to me what a generous and loving community we are at Trinity and how connected we are to the world beyond our church walls in service to others.

We have yet another opportunity for connectedness Sunday at 2 PM when the Micah churches are invited to share a program at Shiloh Old Site commemorating the first Africans’ arrival in America, tragically as slaves. I can’t help but compare that to today’s problems in our nation with so many from other countries trying to settle here, as we feel confusion about just what our role is in receiving refugees. We will worship together at Shiloh Old Site for about 40 minutes on Sunday, then disburse to our own churches to ring our bells to celebrate freedom and unity. We had already planned to do the bell-ringing, as requested by Bishop Curry; contact Rosemary Arneson if you want to ring the Trinity bell at 3 PM on Sunday.

Rev. Jere Hinson gave us a fine sermon Sunday in which he said the church happens in the world and it’s not always either easy or pleasant. We have so many connections to the world around us outside our Parish and so many Trinitarians taking leadership to make those connections worthwhile. As one of the founding churches of Micah, we continue to assist the homeless in our area, with Tom Williams representing us with the Micah leaders and Robin Barrett, with Daughters of the King and many other volunteers, helping with Micah breakfast.

Under the leadership of Susan McSpadden, Blessings in a Backpack reaches into the community to provide weekend food for 120 hungry children in a local elementary school. Sponsorships are still needed to support this program for the coming school year, so if you can donate $100 to feed a child for the year or $50 for a semester, some child will not be hungry on the weekends.

Through the efforts of Interfaith Community Council, coordinated for us by Beth Schroeder, about 1300 children and teens last month received new clothes, school supplies, toiletries, and encouragement to begin this new school year. Trinitarians were generous with their money and donation of clothing and many volunteer hours to make this ambitious community project a success.

Tuesday Night Outreach, under the leadership of Joanne Beck, reaches deep into the community of those who are usually not homeless but lead marginal lives. Often our patrons are working poor – they hold a job but get their hours cut back, have a medical emergency that wrecks their finances, or their car breaks down, they can’t afford to fix it, they can’t get to work… you get the picture. We provide food and a small amount of financial help if they have an eviction notice or are about to have their water or electricity turned off. Many Trinitarians volunteer their time, their dollars, and food donations to support this program. If you want to see happy people, come help at Thanksgiving or Christmas as we give folks turkeys and other holiday fixins’, when they couldn’t see a holiday dinner in the future of their families this year.

Last Saturday we reached across the ocean to help hungry school children in Africa when we packed 10,000 meals in less than two hours with Rise Against Hunger, organized by Paige and Fred Kerby. The person leading the program announced that Trinity had packed 76,000 meals through the years with this organization. Can you imagine that many fewer children in need of a meal, thanks to Trinitarians’ generosity of time and money? And it was fun – our family had three generations there helping out, as did many others. The most dedicated seemed to be our youngest volunteers, children running back and forth to carry completed items to another station in the packing process.

We have had other international projects in the past – supporting digging community wells in Africa, mission trips led by John Henze to Honduras until it became too risky to travel there, and support of other programs through Episcopal Relief and Development Fund.

And we have yet another opportunity to reach out to the Water Slide patrons on Saturday, August 31, by handing out water, coordinated by Brenda Chase. Thanks to those who have signed up to help; more would be welcome. Those of you bringing ice chests, please bring them (labeled with your name) to the storage area in Barber Hall by August 30 so we can fill them with ice and water early the morning of the 31st.

So Jere, thanks for reminding us that, while we belong in church on Sundays, we belong in the world helping our fellow man every other day. And we can never do enough.

Students are returning to campus!

Campus Ministry meetings will begin and students will be looking forward to those home-cooked meals!   As some of our students live in off-campus housing, these meals mean a great deal to them! This year we partner, once again, with Christ Lutheran Church and St. George's. We should prepare meals to feed 15 hungry students. A sign-up sheet with details is now on the church door. Trinity's first meal is September 3rd!!  A whole meal to much to prepare? Sign-up with a friend!
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS
Have you ever had the experience of someone praying privately with or for you? Those who attend the Wednesday noon Eucharist are accustomed to having a priest lay hands on their heads and pray for them each week. This is a very meaningful service for them. Private prayer is also available at Trinity every Sunday morning! Two trained lay prayer ministers are happy to pray with you after communion at every 11 o’clock service, and once a month at 8 AM and 9:15 AM. Why not take the opportunity to try something new this Sunday!  Click here for more information on HEALING PRAYER at Trinity.

PATRICK BRANTLEY's Eagle Scout Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, August 24th. The ceremony will be held at Trinity at 2:00 PM. All are welcome to attend the ceremony and the reception afterwards.

ACOLYTE TRAINING – Youth in grades six through twelve interested in becoming acolytes are encouraged to attend the training session on August 31 from 11:00 am to 2:30 PM. We’ll take a break for lunch. Meet in the sanctuary. That is the day of the waterslide, so parking close to Trinity may not be available. Please email Harry Dickinson (or call 540-785-6023) to register. If that date does not fit your schedule, please contact Harry.

If you can volunteer to hand out water to people participating in the FREDERICKSBURG WATER SLIDE EVENT on Saturday, August 31, or if you can lend a cooler for that day, please sign up on the sheet on the door. We will be doing our Walking Evangelism on that Saturday in our own lower parking lot where ticket holders are lining up to ride the water slide.

All interested in TRINITY'S MUSIC PROGRAM will meet in the choir room on Thursday, August 29th at 7 PM. Contact Denise if you have questions!

There will be NO CAFÉ TRINITY on Sunday, September 1st, Labor Day Weekend!

CLUB 45 will have their first meeting, a Game Day, on Sunday September 15 from 11:30 – 1:30 PM in Jamison Hall. Lunch will be served. Club 45 is a ministry for preteens in 4th and 5th grades. Club 45 helps to bridge the gap that preteens feel as they transition from their elementary to teenage years. Our time together will include fun-filled events such as laser tag and bowling and will also include community service projects that make a difference in the lives of others. Meetings are normally the third Sunday of the month.

AMANDA KOTVAL will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests on Saturday, Sept. 7, 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Rd., Richmond 23238. A sign-up sheet for carpooling to the event has been posted on the doors in the church entryway. If you are willing to drive, please indicate how many riders you can take. Plan to meet in the College Ave. parking lot at 8 AM that morning.

CARING FOR OTHERS

Trinity Church successfully packed 10,000 meals in our RISE AGAINST HUNGER event last Saturday. These meals will be used to reduce hunger in various locations throughout the world. Thanks to all those who contributed the time and money necessary to make our meal packing event possible. Trinity has packed over 76,000 meals for the Rise Against Hunger program over the last six years.

BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK $3.51 per week to feed a child. - Trinity was involved in a pilot program for Blessings in a Backpack last year. The pilot consisted of weekend food packs prepackaged by Sysco and delivered directly to the church. This pilot of Weekend Food Packs was quite successful for the National Blessings in a Backpack Program. Trinity's volunteers found the program more beneficial also, because the foods (7-8 items per student package) came already prepackaged, no shopping was required, packing is streamlined and the food packs are much lighter to carry. Most especially the children loved it! Trinity will do the same thing this year and in addition to the food pack our volunteers will pack a microwaveable macaroni and cheese, soup or granola bar. The cost per week of the food pack is $2.76 for a total 36 week cost of $99.36. To include the macaroni and cheese it is $0.75 per week for a total 36 week cost of $27.00. The total cost to feed a child is $126.36 per year. The donation requested is $100.00. with funds remaining from last year to pay for the additional food item. Our goal is to feed 120 children. Please help!

FROM THE NATIONAL EPISCOPAL CHURCH

The Episcopal Church continues to respond to the complex array of challenges facing immigrants across the United States, including support for children and other people seeking asylum at the U.S. southern border, assisting immigrants who are undocumented, advocating for comprehensive immigration reform, and resettling refugees through Episcopal Migration Ministries. In a new video, The Episcopal Church: WALKING WITH IMMIGRANTS, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry introduces five bishops whose dioceses are actively engaged in immigrant welcome. Each bishop shares ways individuals or groups can support this work. Their intent is to inspire action and to highlight the many ways people can engage with and deepen their understanding of immigration issues. Read more here. ..
