August 14, 2020
Did you know Red Wing has a 78.6% response rate to the 2020 Census? That's great, but in graded terms, it's still only a C+. Let's aim for an A+ and get a complete count for our city. 10 minutes today helps our city earn its share of 675 billion federal dollars over the next 10 years.

Primary Election Complete
Candidate Forums Coming Soon!
the words meet gthe candidates imposed over a red white and blue banner
The primary election last Tuesday narrowed the mayor race to two candidates: Sean Dowse and Mike Wilson. Sean Dowse earned 1,321 votes and Mike Wilson earned 1,155, beating Janie Farrar who earned 863 votes. 33.84% of Red Wing's registered voters participated in the primary election, and the League of Women Voters is working to make sure more of us get out for the general election in November. The League will host two Meet the Candidates events in September. Watch their Facebook page for more details.

Join the Conversation on Race
Next Thursday, August 20, join the Red Wing Human Rights Commission for one of two online community discussions about race and the book Waking Up White: And Finding Myself in the Story of Race. Discussions are at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. and will be facilitated by Dr. Thomas Harris and Alyssa Gostonczik from the LaCrosse area. Read more about the facilitators here. For direct links to attend the virtual events, click here. Free copies of the book are at the Red Wing Public Library and Fair Trade Books, but you don't have to read the book to attend. Everyone is welcome. Questions? Call 651-212-3812.
Advisory Team Starting Soon
After more than 80 applications and nominations, 12 community members have been named to the Advisory Team on Government Policies and Practices, which will advise City Council on steps to take in creating a more racially equitable local government. The first 18 months of the process will focus on public safety and policing. Work in all other government areas and departments will follow. Members are Steve Blaine, Juan DeLaFuente, Alexis DeVries, Michael Holmes, Sara Kern, Cory Koplin, Doug Larsen, Samantha Malcom, Liz Magill, Yadira Ramos, Cholwe Walker, and Thomas Young. Read here for details on the Advisory Team, the selection process, and the city's racial equity work ahead.
Introducing GeoHub!
Interactive Maps of Red Wing
Have you ever wondered where all of Red Wing's parks are located, who owns the streetlight on your boulevard, or what Red Wing looked like in the late 19th century? Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist Leanne Knott explains how to view city maps through GeoHub on the City's website in this episode of City 101.
Climate Action Continues
Red Wing has the ambitious goal of reducing its emissions by 80% by 2040, but what steps will we take to achieve that goal? They're laid out in the new Climate Action Work Plan, created by the Sustainability Commission. The plan outlines how Red Wing will reduce emissions by 20% over the next 5 years. One strategy with the biggest effects, increasing building efficiency, will reduce emissions by 6.8% alone. You can read about that and the entire plan here.
Nominate Someone for Human Rights Work
Who do you know who has stood up to promote and protect human rights in the Red Wing area? Nominate one or more people for the annual Amos Owen Award, presented by the Red Wing Human Rights Commission. The award is named after Amos Owen, the late spiritual leader from Prairie Island Indian Community who worked to preserve Dakota language and culture. You'll find the online and hard-copy nomination forms here. Deadline is September 21, 2020, at 4 p.m. Questions? Email here or call 651-212-3812.
New Safety Equipment for the Fire Dept.
Firefighting equipment is not cheap but it's important. Thankfully, the Red Wing Fire Department was recently awarded $280,000 from the Assistance to Firefighters federal grant program. It was a challenging grant to apply for but well worth the effort. The Fire Department will use the money to purchase new Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and face masks--equipment that will keep our fire fighters protected while they keep the rest of us safe.
City Meetings Back Online
Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in Goodhue County, all City Council, board, commission, and other public meetings will be held virtually for the foreseeable future. Not to worry, though. We’ve made it easy for you to watch or participate. You can find login information at the top of every meeting agenda so you can join in from any electronic device, or you can watch Channel 6 on cable TV or through the City’s website. Our intern, Jack Staley, explains it all in this episode of City 101.
Can You Find It?
Back and better than ever--a new Can You Find It? This one might require some sleuthing, unless you're a history buff extraordinaire. As you may have guessed already, this is the top of a grave marker--but whose? We'll give you a hint: The name on this monument is shared with a well-known structure in the same area. You may even find some clues on the City's website. Email us your guess here and you might be our winner! We'll reveal the answer in the next edition of City Beat.

All in a Day's Work
Bob standing in the Public Works mechanic shop.
Meet one of the hidden heroes of the Public Works Department. Bob Enevold is one of just three full-time mechanics who service all of the City's vehicles. Yep, ALL of them, including the 17 vehicles that our Streets & Fleets crews have been using to clear up the remains of last weekend's storm.

Public Works crews are still collecting debris, so if you have brush you'd like picked up, please place it on your boulevard close to the curb. You can also bring your fallen tree branches and brush to the Waste Campus for free disposal through Saturday, August 22. Thanks to Bob and all the street crews and behind-the-scenes staff who are working hard to keep our city beautiful!
