The numbers are in and they are impressive! Each year the Oregon Employment Department crunches the number and produces an overview of employment by Oregon's nonprofit sector. The Oregon's Nonprofits in 2018 was just released last week. I have to admit that I geek out a bit on this data. Here are a few of the highlights from the report:
- 196,300 employees work for the 9,800 staffed nonprofits in Oregon.
- Health Care and Social Assistance is the largest nonprofit employers.
- Nonprofits make up 11.9 percent of Oregon's private sector employment.
- Oregon's nonprofits paid an average $51,844, just $194, or 0.4 percent below the private for-profit industries $52,038 in 2018.
- Nonprofits reported $23.07 median hourly wage (1st quarter 2018).
- About 22,500 rural Oregonians are employed by nonprofits.
It is important to note that for this study, the OED includes all types of nonprofits, not just 501(c)(3)s. Kudos to the team at the Oregon Employment Department, especially Nick Beleiciks and Dallas Fridley, for this important data report. The power of the nonprofit sector in economic scale and employment responsibilities is striking.

2019 High Desert Nonprofit Leaders Conference: Advancing Our Communities Together

How Much Cash Should a Nonprofit Have in Reserves?

In early 2019, Portland entrepreneur Junki and Linda Yoshida donated their landmark Troutdale home as a retreat for kids who are battling cancer to the Randall Children's Hospital Foundation, valued at approximately $2 million.
Another story this year about remarkable generosity: Naitos' real estate proceeds lead to at least $5.5M in philanthropic gifts. In addition to Lines for Life, members of the Naito family will also be contributing gifts to eight other organizations for a total of $5.5 million. Among the other organizations are Raphael House of Portland, the Oregon Historical Society, the Oregon Nikkei Endowment, the Portland Audubon Society and Central City Concern.
Relying on these types of unexpected donations is one way to build up your organization's reserves, but you can't count on these generous gifts.

NAO is hiring a new Training Program Coordinator!
Are you passionate about serving Oregon's nonprofit sector? We are seeking to add a dedicated NAO team member who is organized, detail-oriented and able to manage fast-paced and complex deadlines. The Training Program Coordinator plays a critical role in all aspects of NAO's Training Program offerings which consist of in-person and online delivery of dozens of statewide events per year. The Training Program Coordinator handles all of the advance, onsite, and post-event logistics, customer service and presenter support and also plays a key role in program planning, monitoring, and evaluation activities.

Building Movement Project's Race to Lead Survey
Do you care about racial equity? Do you work at a nonprofit? BMP wants your
perspective
- make your voice heard.
In 2016, the Building Movement Project conducted a national survey on race and leadership in nonprofits. The data from that survey led to the development of the popular Race to Lead report series. This summer, the Race to Lead survey is back! By participating, you will contribute to one of the largest existing data sets on race and leadership in the nonprofit sector and will help inform the next round of Race to Lead reports. The confidential survey is open to anyone working for pay in the sector and takes about 25 minutes to fill out.
Deadline is Wednesday, August 28, 2019.

AmeriCorps VISTA Request for Concept Papers
AmeriCorps VISTA is a full-time national service program for organizations interested in developing lasting solutions to the problem of poverty in the United States.
The Oregon State Office of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is seeking concept papers for the AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program.
AmeriCorps VISTA is a full-time national service program for organizations interested in developing lasting solutions to address poverty. Nonprofit organizations, Indian Tribes, and state, city, and local government agencies are eligible to be AmeriCorps VISTA sponsors. AmeriCorps VISTA members are placed with a sponsor organization to develop and expand services and programs that help lift low-income individuals out of poverty. Their work is concentrated on building the capacity of the organization and community. Each year, over 800 organizations host more than 8,000 AmeriCorps VISTA members.
