Dane County Helps Battle Social Isolation
|
Social isolation continues to be a serious concern for so many people in Dane County, especially so for seniors and people with disabilities. In fact, research indicates that isolation has as big a negative impact on people's health as smoking!
So it's exciting news that the Dane County Transportation Department is introducing a transportation option focused on rides to social outings, serving seniors and people with disabilities who live independently in their own homes in Madison, Monona, Middleton and Fitchburg.
The service is provided by Transit Solutions, the same company that contracts to take folks on weekly grocery and mall shopping trips, as well as rides to lunch-time meal sites in Dane County communities.
Trip plans for the new service include destinations like museums, Goodwill, movie theaters, Marshall's, HoChunk Gaming and more. Rides are door-to-door and are scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m., giving enough time to spread your wings to experience the destination!

These kinds of programs make life in Dane County richer and more accessible for people who are often isolated. For more information, contact Jane Betzig, Dane County Mobility Manager at

Intergenerational Volunteers Needed in Schools for 2019-20
|
|
|
Foster Grandparent Alyce Haskins helping with STEM activities at Badgerland Chapter of Girl Scouts.
|
|
RSVP's Intergenerational program is looking for volunteer tutors/mentors or classroom assistants in Dane County schools for the 2019-20 school year. There is no minimum hour or day requirements, just a willingness to see students succeed academically.
The program also offers other opportunities, such as the Computer Buddy program where you correspond weekly with a student by computer and at the end of the school year buddy party you can meet your buddy face to face and make that positive connection. It only requires about 30 minutes a week and your own computer.
Also, we offer Commonwealth where you take part in a mock interview helping students practice their job interview skills, it occurs once a month on a given date and time.
With Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Badgerland, you can lead a group of diverse girls with STEM projects, you are able to name the location, dates and afterschool time.
If you become an RSVP Intergenerational volunteer you will receive volunteer insurance, quarterly RSVP newsletter and invite to recognition events.
If you qualify as a low-income senior, can commit to a minimum of five hours a week and would like to receive a tax-free stipend, meal/travel reimbursement and enjoy seeing students improve academically, you can tutor in Dane County schools as a Foster Grandparent. The program has in-services and recognition events throughout the year.
If you would like to be a part of the Intergenerational or Foster Grandparent program please contact Laura Mikkelson at
[email protected]
or 608-441-7894.
