UUCUC'S OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED AND STAFF WILL BE OFFLINE ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, TO HONOR VETERANS DAY THIS YEAR.
THIS SUNDAY'S SERVICE
Rev. Karen Bush
Sunday, November 14 at 10:15 a.m. via Livestream

There are different kinds of battles in this life.

The presence of veterans among us reminds us to remember those who served our country at a tremendous cost to themselves. Many paid a high price that has profoundly impacted them in mind, body, and spirit. Too many others paid the ultimate price.

Yes. There are different kinds of battles in this life.

For many of us the Covid- 19 pandemic has pushed us near a breaking point at times.

It has created unrelenting stressors: the illness and possible death of loved ones, fear about getting sick ourselves, prolonged isolation and disconnection, fear of job loss, shifting childcare needs, family demands, and more.

Those of us who already had been struggling to recover from past traumas may find ourselves triggered in new ways.

Consequentially, many of us are taking our stresses and our frustrations out on the nearest and easiest target….our selves.
In our isolation and disconnection we have become captives in a never ending stream of negative self talk.

On Sunday November 14 Rev KB, with the help of Anne Newman and her puppet friends, invites you to join them as they creatively share with us about pathways toward recovery, following the understanding that in order to better love others, we must First love ourselves.

Our sincere gratitude to veterans Walt McMahon, Kathleen Robbins, and Gail Tittle, and to puppeteer, Anne Newman, UUCUC members, for their personal contributions to this worship service.

OUR CARING CONGREGATION
JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, November 7, 2021.

From Anonymous: A joy to celebrate All Souls on this beautiful Sunday morning.

From Samuel Beshers: For family members who could easily have been no longer with us, but who still are.

From Jerry Carden: My brother Steve would have turned 70 tomorrow. We lost him 30 years ago to depression and suicide.

From Sandy Finnerty: My brother-in-law Mark MacNeill of St Petersburg, Florida recently died. He had 90 healthy years full of his interests in cartography, astronomy, music, poetry, football and Celtic culture. We will miss him.

From Chris Hannauer: Remembering my mother, Barbara Hannauer, who would have turned 75 this week. I think of her every day.

From Ali Newbold: Soooo grateful to my dear friend for bringing to this glorious fall day remembrance service today! And the many welcoming UU faces who lift my heart daily.

From Ali Newbold: I just learned that my leading edge ONCO in Chicago unexpectedly leaves permanently in just weeks, but rather than referring me to a colleague, advises local care.. However the one here carrying out his directives (to reduce trips to Chicago) just confirmed that she will only (like a robotic arm) carry out a leading edge Oncos plans for me here, but she will not be my treating oncologist. In fact, because all those months while the disease had no treatment whatsoever, it’s not rampant throughout bones and liver, yet I’m soo to be at sea with no treating oncologist. Aaccckkkk. Though I had a very bad allergic reaction 10/25 to new-to-me chemo, yet they’re repeating the same dosage on 11/15/21(!!)

From Ali Newbold: A) U of I volunteer students will give me a second 3 hours to help clear the yard of hearty weeds. B) Though too tired to do Halloween, when a new neighbor knocked to say she’d bring her kids and her sisters to show me their costumes, I had no choice and scrambled for any sort of treats. That the tots preferred apples to candy and the big kids chose hot chocolate mix vs Reese’s was a surprise, but they all like the coins! So thanks to the aid of a pal, I really enjoyed Halloween.

From Beth Simpson: Immense gratitude for the beautiful gathering yesterday to celebrate Laura Weiskamp. Words can’t express how much it meant.

From Tegan Stynoski: Thrilled to announce that my 6 year old son was able to get his first covid vaccine yesterday. I am so grateful for the opportunity to protest him and his friends.
Please send your joys or sorrows to joysandsorrows@uucuc.organy time before the Joys and Sorrows portion of the service. They will be read aloud.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE
UUCUC Social Action Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive offerings from our congregation. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

During the month of November our Shared Offering recipient is the MAIA Impact School in Solola, Guatemala. Guatemala is a country with one of the worst gender equity gaps in the Americas. Nowhere is this more apparent than with young indigenous girls, who are essentially an afterthought in society. MAIA Impact School is one of a kind in Central America.

Through a program of rigorous academics, mentorship, socio-emotional support and family engagement, MAIA focuses on maximizing the potential of indigenous girls, nourishing and connecting their talents with 21st century opportunities. Supporting the MAIA Impact School helps address the systemic causes of mass migration and unleashes the untapped leadership potential of young Guatemalan women. Empowered women, with the knowledge and resources to live choice-filled lives, can lead their families and communities out of poverty
