Ben Segarra
to the firm's Maritime practice.
Ben has extensive experience handling matters across the maritime spectrum, defending and prosecuting claims in state and federal court. Ben's experience includes high profile, high stakes litigation such as the defense of multiple Jones Act lawsuits arising from the 2009 hijacking of the MAERSK ALABAMA in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia. Ben also has experience defending clients’ interests during USCG investigations and formulating emergency plans for the recovery and containment of pollutants. He has investigated dozens of marine casualties and claims, covering matters from simple slip-and-falls to death cases as well as property damages caused by allisions and collisions. He has also protected shipowners’ interests in crewmember deportation actions for causes ranging from simple theft to terrorism.
Ben received his LL.M. in Admiralty from Tulane University Law School where he was awarded the Maritime Law Fellowship, completing a rigorous course of study in nearly all aspects of maritime law and also serving as the head research assistant to Professors Martin Davies and Robert Force, two of the nation's preeminent Maritime Law scholars. Ben is a proctor member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States and chair of its Salvage Committee. He is licensed to practice law in Mississippi and Alabama.
