Pre-construction Work on Walnut Bend Lane Underway
Crews have been busy making preparations along Walnut Bend Lane for reconstruction of the roadway from Westpark Drive to Westheimer Road. Workers are replacing and burying deeper AT&T utility lines, as well as marking selected trees for pruning and/or removal. The work precedes the largest capital improvement project Westchase District has ever undertaken: a $20 million reconstruction of Walnut Bend. Extensive improvements will include pedestrian lighting, dedicated bike lanes, custom bus shelters, extensive landscaping, bike racks, benches and signage.
To celebrate the launch of the project, we're hosting a kickoff event at 9 a.m., Tuesday, September 10, near the intersection of Walnut Bend Lane and Richmond Avenue (parking will be available at 10850 Richmond). Representatives from Westchase District, the City of Houston and other local government officials will be on hand to mark the start of the project, which is expected to take about 20 months to complete.

During Droughts, District Manages All Things Green
With a week-long stretch of 100-plus-degree temperatures and regular heat advisories issued from the National Weather Service, August has been a brutal month for people and plants alike. Westchase District's monthly irrigation bill averages about $5,000, but jumps to $7,000 during summer months. Lack of rainfall has officials asking citizens to conserve water. Fortunately, Westchase District employs irrigation technology that maximizes water conservation while continuing to efficiently and effectively maintain the area's beautiful landscaping.
Under the City of Houston's Adopt An Esplanade program, the City does not charge the District for watering of its 12.25 miles of esplanades. However, Westchase District regularly inspects irrigation systems and repairs any leaks. Along Beltway 8, the District uses a centrally-controlled WaterLogic "smart" system that ensures the right amount of water at just the right time to conserve water while saving money.
Westchase District plants low-maintenance, drought-resistant trees, shrubs and seasonal flowers that minimize maintenance costs while maximizing splashes of color year-round. It's all part of creating a beautiful environment which reflects the pride of property owners in the area and promotes economic development.

Burnett Specialists Celebrate 40 Years in District
Burnett Specialists - Texas' largest employee-owned recruitment, temporary staffing, contract, and headhunting service - recently celebrated 45 years in business with a festive anniversary party at the Houston Marriott Westchase. Staff members from Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston and San Antonio enjoyed dinner, dancing and a casino party.
Sue Burnett, the company's founder and president, presented a proclamation from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner making August 1, 2019 Burnett Specialists Day in Houston. In 1979, five years into its history, Burnett Specialists established its headquarters in what would become Westchase District. "We've been in Westchase for 40 years," Burnett said. "Being close to Beltway 8 and the Westpark Tollway has been convenient for my employees as well as for our candidates coming to interview with us. I think the landscaping projects make the District look professional and consistent. It's been a wonderful location and we plan to stay here for many years to come."

Register for HCC's Fall Small Business Success Series
Houston Community College's Center for Entrepreneurship will host a series of five, day-long workshops geared toward entrepreneurs who are either planning to start a business or grow an existing business. The Small Business Success Series will take place at its Westchase District campus, located at 2811 Hayes Road, Room A319/320.

The series is FREE to HCC students, faculty, staff and alumni. Participants who attend all five workshops will receive a certificate of completion.
