To Strive for Justice and Peace in All the Earth
From
elca.org/faithpractices...The Faith Practices Initiative of the ELCA urges members of this church to "put their faith into practice" by living out the promises contained in the liturgy for the Affirmation of Baptism. In that promise, we pledge as members of the body of Christ through baptism to:
- live among God's faithful people
- hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper
- proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed
- serve all people following the example of Jesus
- strive for justice and peace in all the earth
(Evangelical Lutheran Worship, p. 236)

So I send you.
So I send you. One of the most frequent complaints I hear from congregations today is about the dwindling weekly attendance. Upon further reflection, the expectation is that people will flock into the church building. But Jesus did not call us to be silos. Jesus sends us out. And not only does Jesus send us out, we are to go out with a mission. Part of that mission is to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. That is a pretty lofty God-sized mission. Yet I see it happening all around.

And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God.
(Micah 6:8b NRSV)
We celebrate the abundant blessings that are a part of this world. But we also walk in the struggle of human existence where we face our own sin, our self-centeredness, and the collective sin of human institutions, for example, the church, governments, the nations. In this struggle however, we meet the suffering God who bears the sins of the world and sends us out, as ones who are joined in the crucified Christ and in his solidarity with the pain of the world. As believers in Christ we are called to be about the work of justice in our personal and public life. We recognize that God's justice is something deeper and purer than our own best understanding of justice. And yet, we are called to love our neighbor as we would love ourselves.

EmbraceRace
is a multiracial community of parents, teachers, experts and other caring adults who support each other to meet the challenges that race poses to our children, families and communities.
Dialogues On
resources provide seven-week small group encounters to discuss difficult topics. Each series has available a DVD, participant book and leader guide. Current topics include: Race, Sexuality, and The Refugee Crisis.
The CENetwork's website has many additional
learning strategies for Living Our Baptism, including visual materials in various formats, background readings, and additional ideas for activities and events.
