ANTI-RACISM RESOURCES
The library has a variety of antiracism resources. Recent events in Milwaukee and across our nation show us – once again – that it is time to talk about race, oppression, and bias with your family, friends, and coworkers. If we don’t, nothing will change. Learn more
here.

Flexibility. Phasing. Self-compassion. I’ve been saying these words almost every day for the last month, with regard to both the library and my personal life.
We’re excited to share the next phase of library services we’ll offer in the ongoing COVID-19 environment. Our focus is on enabling you to place your own requests for materials from many, but not all, libraries in the county; ensuring that people with limited or no internet access at home can get online for limited periods; and providing a safe space for those who have home insecurity, lack climate control, or need respite.
You’ll note that we’re not focused on being a destination for reading in the library, collaborating, socializing, game playing, and in-person programs. When you come inside, you’ll see a lot of furniture has been stored, and there will be a limited number of people allowed in specific sections of the library.
It’s difficult for us here at the library not to provide you with all the services you want and need right now, but I go back to my current mantra: flexibility, phasing, and self-compassion.
I hope you, your family, and friends are safe and healthy. See you soon,
Rachel Collins

JUNE IS NATIONAL AUDIOBOOK MONTH
|
|
There are numerous benefits to listening to audiobooks. Here are just a few:
EXPANDED VOCABULARY
Audiobooks help expand vocabulary by letting you experience new words and phrases. Plus, you hear the correct way to pronounce words, names, and locales.
TIME
Audiobooks are hands-free, and help with time management and multi-tasking. You can read during your commute, while exercising, cooking, cleaning, crafting, etc.
CRITICAL LISTENING
Audiobooks provide a different way to analyze books by enhancing characters, setting, plot, themes, and other key elements. Listening to an audiobook helps your brain process information in a new way.
"NEW" FORMAT
Audiobooks offer a new way to read which can lead listeners to new books, new authors, and new genres. An engaging narrator provides an interesting and lively experience for the listener.
MENTAL HEALTH
Like print books, audiobooks provide an escape from the stresses of the day. Listening to audiobooks can help you calm your mind and release stress while giving your eyes a break.
There's several different ways you can access audiobooks from the library. You can download e-audiobooks from
Wisconsin's Digital Library or
hoopla, or by checking out a physical
audiobook on CD or
Playaway from our collection. Check one out today!
|
|
Libby
, the app used to listen to e-audiobooks from
Wisconsin's Digital Library
, is now integrated with Alexa and Sonos speakers, enabling you to enjoy all of your borrowed audiobooks without the need for headphones or Bluetooth. More information can be found

Akata Witch
by Nnedi Okorafor
is a compelling, beautifully written novel that will appeal to readers of urban fantasy and young adult alike. Listeners will be wowed by
Yetide Badaki’s
performance, and will have the added benefit of hearing the Nigerian colloquialisms pronounced correctly. Okorafor peppers her language with terms and phrases from many of the languages spoken in Nigeria, enhancing both the setting of the novel and the deep sense of history which accompanies the main character’s journey of discovery. Hearing the Igbo, Efik, Yoruba, and even Pidgin words spoken by a Nigerian-born American actress is a real treat.

WHAT WE'RE LISTENING TO & WHAT WE'RE UP TO
Audiobooks are hands-free and allow for multitasking. Here's some suggestions and examples of how staff are incorporating audiobooks into their lives:
|
|
|
Emily
, our Assistant Director, listens to audiobooks on
hoopla
on dog walks, and to unwind when a print book is too much work! Emily has made a few discoveries on hoopla that she would not have otherwise. Her favorites are mysteries with evocative narration including the
Roderick Allyn
Mysteries
by Ngaio Marsh and Donna Andrews’
Meg Langslow Series.
|
|
Hayley, our Community and Adult Services Librarian, is listening to
How to Do Nothing on
audiobook CD while working on a jigsaw puzzle. "I enjoy listening to audiobooks while doing something with my hands." Odell's book is especially timely, challenging how we think about the things we value like time and money.

INFORMATION YOU CAN TRUST
|
With so many sources for information, it can be hard to sort out fact from fiction and to determine who to trust.
It is more vital than ever to be certain that you are accessing and sharing the most factual and authoritative information you can.
The state of Wisconsin has created a one-stop resource for information on COVID-19. With links to relevant state agencies and updated news releases, you can easily stay on top of the facts.
