I hope you are staying safe and doing well. As we begin to settle into virtual school, meetings, and mask wearing we are taken back to time when things were not so simple. It is almost like a pause on life, that helps us reflect on what is truly meaningful, what we need and what we can live without. As municipal clerks, we know this reality all too well as we do more with less; but yet we come together to face these challenges, we think and rethink, do lots of research, and even reach out to chapter members for advice, guidance, and support. NTMCA members continue to thrive and support each other in so many ways. It always makes me proud of our organization when I witness the spirit of solidarity and support shared among our members.

In August, we hosted a virtual Athenian Dialogue on August 7th. I want to give a BIG thanks to the Seminar Committee members Shelley Scazzero (Hudson Oaks) and Lisandra Leal (North Richland Hills) for doing an awesome job with this year’s Athenian Dialogue. The dialogue was led by Jannette Goodall, City of Austin, who did an excellent job of presenting “Girl Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are So You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be” by Rachel Hollis.

excellent information on malicious emails, social media, malware, and virtual software. Hackers are always one step ahead, so we have to be vigilant and stay two steps ahead of them by 1) think before you act, 2) when in doubt throw it out, 3) share with care, 4) create strong passwords, 5) secure access to your online accounts, 6) use security software and protect your PC, 7) always log off, 8) secure your mobile device and 9) call for support, they’re there to help!
Our guest speaker was TMCA President Shelley George. Her presentation included highlights of her current term as TMCA president and the challenges of the pandemic that have restricted her travel to virtual meetings with chapters. She presented information about TMCA boards and committees and encouraged everyone to serve.

We have an exciting future to look forward to as a chapter, and it’s important that the challenge and support the chapter receives from its members, facilitates this. Please consider using your exceptional skills and talents on a committee. Your contribution, time, involvement and expertise will help drive our chapter forward.
Chapter committees do a lot more than just setting up the Holiday Party or planning the Professional Seminar. Oftentimes, committees are a way to get involved in important Chapter business, such as bylaws, drafting the budget, and advancing new technology. Working on a committee can allow you to demonstrate leadership and help you stand out from the pack
Here are some things to keep in mind while you consider joining a committee:
You Can Have Your Say
Who doesn't want to have a finger on the scale? Serving on a committee gives you an opportunity to influence decisions that could really impact the Chapter and membership
They Add Variety to Your Work
Committee work can be a refreshing way to break up your day-to-day schedule and breaks the monotony of normal tasks.
You’ll Expand Your Network
Not only will you get to exercise different skills, you will also interact with members of the Chapter that you might not get to see or spend time with. Committee work can help expand your membership friendships.
You'll Expand Your Knowledge Base
Committee work can allow you to dip your toes into a variety of new knowledge pools, such as planning an amazing Professional Seminar or helping to raise funds for the Alyce Deering Scholarship Committee. You'll gain experience and a better picture of what it takes to run Chapter events.
It's a Chance to Demonstrate Leadership
If you're looking to stand out, succeeding on a committee is one way to do so. Whether it's organizing the best holiday party the Chapter has ever seen, or revamping the bylaws , committee work is a good way to show that you know what it takes to get a job done successfully.
Here's list of the committees, along with the "big picture' of each committee:
- Alyce Deering Scholarship Fund – Promote, Review and Awards
- Audit (2020) – Behind the scenes review
- Budget – Behind the scenes review
- Holiday Celebration (2021) – Event Planning
- Membership/Communications – Promote, Communications
- Municipal Clerk of the Year – Promote, Review and Award
- Nominating – Promote and Nominate

Please consider submitting your application to serve on a committee. Your Chapter needs your skill set, and we would love to see you in action! If you have any questions, please contact Traci Henderson at 817.427.6062 or email: thenderson@nrhtx.com.
