GSC Faculty E-News for August 2019
Creating and Cultivating Communities of Practice

Cultivating communities of practice at GSC is a high priority. As educators, we understand that much of what we learn is through collaborative thought and experiences with our peers. We saw this at work during the Teach Beyond the Text workshop held on July 25 th at our Concord campus. Several GSC faculty attended to learn and explore new ways, when appropriate, to integrate rich media within their courses. Faculty development opportunities provide a great medium to share best practices, create new knowledge and continue to educate yourself and others.

We will continue the Teach Beyond the Text series with three additional workshops offered both virtually and at our Concord campus. I encourage you to participate in these sessions to familiarize yourself with our faculty and explore new ideas and thoughts. You can learn more about these opportunities by visiting https://faculty.granite.edu/index.php/faculty-training-development/

Within this month’s newsletter you will find information on current faculty, updates on current initiatives, upcoming faculty development sessions and workshops, and faculty spotlights and updates.

If you have questions or thoughts about our current faculty development opportunities or ideas for future sessions, please click here . We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Thank you for all you do for GSC and our students!
With regards,

Dr. Scott Stanley, Provost & Vice President of Academic Affairs

Courtney Rice
Director of Undergraduate Health & Wellness Programs

Courtney Rice joined the GSC team in July 2017 as Program Director for Undergraduate Health and Wellness programs. She brings over 20 years of experience in the fields of exercise science, wellness programming, and health education, serving 10 years of her career in higher education. A pivotal moment that sparked her interest in a higher education career was serving as graduate assistant at the University of Maine where she obtained her Master of Science in Kinesiology and Physical Education. There, she assisted with conducting research, taught, and defended her thesis that examined health and fitness markers of low-income and non-low-income youth. She took courses outside of her degree to also obtain teaching certifications. Some of her fondest memories are from the collegial and spirited atmosphere of teaching and coaching at the high school level in Maine before getting an offer to lead a public health program connected to state initiatives.

Energized by collaboration and strategic planning, she has held a strong connection to helping communities; developed health and wellness programs in the public and private sectors, served on community health coalitions, state planning committees for physical activity, nutrition and tobacco cessation public health interventions, and served as a New England American Cancer Society Leadership fellow.

When her family life brought her to New Hampshire, she worked as adjunct faculty in the Exercise Science program at Manchester Community College (MCC) teaching Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, and a variety of health and fitness courses. Eventually she became program coordinator and advised students and assisted with strategic initiatives. She also worked in private healthcare as a clinical exercise physiologist and collaborated on research examining improvements in functional capacity and quality of life for patients participating in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Her work with people is what she values most in her career, and her first love is her family-her husband Lee, and their three kids; Kate, who is headed off to college in the fall, and Finn, and Tully who have a very long way to go…...

Shared Advising Model Rolls Out in Graduate Studies
Over the past several terms, program directors in the MS Nursing and MS Health Care Management programs have been pilot testing a new advising model for our graduate programs. This system, called “shared advising”, offers a team approach to meeting the communication and advising needs of our busy Masters' degree students.

Starting this fall, each program will have a team of one professional advisor and a program director working with every MS program to ensure that students receive timely and accurate information to make academic and career decisions. Professional advisors will focus on academic communication, including course selection and registration, and program directors will help connect students to career enhancement opportunities and provide professional mentorship.

Also, thank you for participating in our systems for reporting both positive observations and performance concerns through progress reporting in WebRock. Please know that the response to your concerns may include one or more members of the “success team” assigned to that student. As always, thank you for the important instructional work you do to keep our students moving forward academically and professionally and we hope our new shared advising model helps you feel supported in that work.

For more information on the new shared advising model for Graduate Studies, please contact Dr. Carina Self at carina.self@granite.edu .
