Superintendent’s performance objectives approved
Northwest ISD annually sets performance objectives for the district, created by the superintendent and guided with the input of trustees.
This year’s performance objectives, approved by trustees during the meeting, focus on seven areas: literacy at all grade levels; academic progress; college, career and life readiness; meeting students’ needs; safety and security; continued financial accountability and transparency; and supporting staff. Hazardous routes designated
Each year, school districts designate any hazardous routes that may prevent students inside of the 2-mile busing radius from feasibly arriving to school. Trustees approved the 2019-20 school year’s hazardous routes.
Through the designation, families of students who would otherwise travel a hazardous route – such as a busy highway – are eligible for district-provided busing. To see the list of 26 hazardous routes as associated by schools,

Students who live more than 2 miles from the zoned schools they attend remain eligible for district-provided busing.
Student handbook, code of conduct discussed
Trustees annually provide input regarding the coming school year’s student handbook and code of conduct, providing any guidance regarding potential changes before voting on the new document.
Most changes to the document are minor in nature, such as changing names or positions based on staff or board updates, while other changes primarily reflect legal or regulatory updates to keep pace with new laws.

Potential changes to graduation honors discussed
Trustees discussed possible changes to the manner in which Northwest ISD recognizes honor graduates following feedback during the 2018-19 school year.
Four options are being considered, including remaining at the current policy of how students are recognized as honor graduates. To see the four options,

In other action, the board
- Heard a report regarding elementary and secondary education district effectiveness. To see the report, click here.
- Approved a notice of a public meeting regarding the proposed 2019-20 tax rate. The board will hold the meeting on Aug. 26, voting on the proposed tax rate of $1.42 per $100 of taxable property. This figure represents a 7-cent decrease from the 2018-19 tax rate following the state legislature’s compression of tax rates.
- Entered into or renewed several agreements with outside agencies or entities that provide services for the benefit of students, such as school resource officers, deaf education and more.
