a veteran journalist who was part of a Pulitzer-Prize winning team from The New York Times covering the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, will work with students and faculty to explore new concepts in audience development and building community engagement with local news.

Student named a winner in national sports writing contest
|
Braden Shaw
has been named a winner of the prestigious Jim Murray Memorial Foundation scholarship, a $5,000 national award for excellence in sports writing at the college level.

Two students and
CHALK magazine
won awards in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Student Magazine Contest:
- EASE magazine, a business plan and prototype pages for a new quarterly book-a-zine designed to help 18- to 33-year-olds relieve stress, won first place in the New Magazine Ideas category. The magazine was created Rhiannon Riesemny and Libby Stauffer in Associate Professor Carol Holstead's fall 2018 Magazine Publishing class.
- Rebekah Swank's article, "Sex Toys and Why You Should Be Using Them," won an honorable mention in the Service and Information category. Swank wrote the article in Holstead's spring 2019 Magazine Writing class, and it appeared in CHALK, the University Daily Kansan's online magazine.
- CHALK magazine won an honorable mention in the Online Magazine category. The magazine launched in spring 2019 and was edited by Rebekah Lodos.
