Search Update
We have had several conversations in our committee and with Michael Ambler about the high degree of confidentiality the Search process requires.
The high degree of confidentiality is for two reasons: 1) the dignity of applicants, and 2) the unity of the congregation. We need to protect the zone of privacy required for this process, so we cannot share any details about applications. Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

Invitation to a Discussion
I would love the opportunity to have time to talk with folks about our
various lives, with more detail and candor and reflection than is ordinarily possible. One thought I had following a conversation with one of you was that we might gather and discuss the role race has played in our lives. My thought is not so much that we would air our views on race relations-though that would surely come up given the country's currently fraught circumstances. Rather, I thought we might use our own individual exposure to folks of a different skin color than our own as a way to reflect on the various stages of our lives and how we look at those stages from our present vantage points. We might begin by posing questions such as "When did you first come in contact with people of color? What were the circumstances? How old were you? Where were you living at the time? What, if any, were your reactions? What were the reactions of those around you?" This might naturally morph into questions like "When were you first aware of race discrimination? What was your response? Were you able to do anything about it?"
And then . . . who knows where we might go?
We've all lived a good while, and its strikes me that this sort of discussion could open the door to some rich exchanges and the sort of intimacy that doesn't always come naturally.
Anyway . . . just a thought.
If anyone is interested, you can join me at St. Brendan's this Monday, the 19th at, say 3:15. We can take an hour or so and then proceed to meditation at 4:30-after which we can decide how and whether to proceed.

ALFRED'S CHRISTMAS FUND
There is a festive box near the Church entrance which awaits your generosity.
Through financial and in-kind donations the Fund provides Christmas gifts for some several hundred island children who would otherwise not have a Christmas. The effort is led by Bobbi Billings of Deer Isle. By filling our box with gifts, we can reduce the workload of Bobbi and her volunteers, while enjoying the good feeling that comes from worthwhile giving. Gift suggestions include: Barbie dolls, Large Lego sets, Sleds, Remote control cars, trucks & planes, Jackets, Kids' boots, and Snow pants. (A longer list is appended to the box.)
Of course, your financial donations are also welcome. You can either make a payment to St. Brendan's, marked for Alfred's Christmas Fund, or send a payment to:

Stewardship Campaign for 2020
Our Stewardship Campaign is under way and pledges are being received. The Ingathering will be next Sunday, August 25th. We hope you can be with us then as we bring the pledges up to the altar with the offering. The Stewardship Committee will be holding a special brunch to celebrate following the service!

St. Brendan Women's Bishopswood Retreat 2019
Sign-up for St. Brendan's Women's Retreat at Camp Bishopswood is open.
Dates: Sept. 3 - 6: early afternoon on Tuesday until after breakfast on Friday.
Cost per person: $275. A deposit of $100 confirms your place.
As treasurer of this special event I would appreciate your letting me know by Sunday(pdonahue8@gmail) if you want to come this year. We need to confirm with Bishopwood Camp and the caterer if we are coming 9/3-9/6.
It is a three night retreat. When I get a count of those who want to commit I will get back to you with the details of finalizing your spot. If you have any questions about retreat please call me at 348-6041.

A beautiful day and the warm hospitality of the Tarlton's (Thank you Peter and Ann!) combined to make this year's Lobster Picnic most enjoyable. Much gratitude also goes to Skip for the lobsters (and cooking them!) and and Judy Miller for organizing the food and logistics.

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost:
In today's liturgy, we are confronted with some of Jesus' hardest words. As he traveled toward Jerusalem, certain of the great crisis that lay ahead, Jesus set forth the serious nature of discipleship. He referred to his approaching death as his "baptism." He revealed that faithfulness to God would produce opposition and division.
Again, we hear from Isaiah in one of his best passages. In order to reach his audience he presents a parable about a vineyard that refuses to produce grapes and gets the audience's agreement that it should be destroyed. Then he tells the people that Judah is God's vineyard and has been unfruitful.
In the second reading today, we are assured that regardless of the opposition and division which faithfulness to God may bring, we have hope. That hope is based first on the record of God's faithful people in the past, but is based above all on the record of Jesus. The "cloud of witnesses" of the past is now joined and led by Jesus "the pioneer and perfecter of our faith."
As we gather in Eucharist, we are indeed surrounded by the witness of those in ages past whose faith in God led them to hard and tough decisions. In Christ and with each other the joys and the hard disciplines of faith are united. We recall Christ's death and resurrection and our own incorporation into his dying and rising, which began in us in baptism.
