US Approves first commercial drone use beyond user's visual field

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has approved the first drone flight beyond the operator's sight line, a major advance for retailers like Amazon.com Inc seeking to speed up deliveries by drone.

Drone flights are currently required to remain in the operating team's sight to spot and avoid aircraft and other obstacles.

The flight by the University of Alaska Fairbanks over an oil pipeline was part of a joint program with the FAA to test "beyond-visual-line-of-sight," or BVLOS, flights in which drones automatically perform tasks that would otherwise be done manually.

GAMA Publishes 2019 Second Quarter Aircraft Shipment Report

GAMA published a mid-year industry update with the release of preliminary second quarter 2019 aircraft shipment and billings data. Piston and business jet deliveries increased through the first six months of 2019 compared to the same time period in 2018, while turboprop airplane and rotorcraft shipments were lower.

"While the year-to-date aircraft shipments are mixed, this should not obscure the outlook for a bright future for general aviation. Our mid-year report shows new aircraft reaching entry into service milestones with additional models expected to enter into service before the end of 2019," said GAMA's President & CEO, Pete Bunce.
