Roslyn Public Schools
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Dear Roslyn Families,

Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent Zoom meetings to discuss the ongoing reopening plans for our schools. I was very pleased by the high level of community engagement and appreciate all the thoughtful questions that were raised. For anyone who did not have the opportunity to watch the sessions live, you can find them on our website by following these links:

As you are already aware, our return in September is going to look very different. At this time, I want to bring a few important details to your attention.

For all elementary students, our plan as of today, is to bring back all K-5 students for in-person learning. We will follow a modified schedule for the first two days:

Thursday, September 3rd - 50% of the class comes in for half a day/staff planning in the afternoon

Friday, September 4th - 50% of the class comes in for half a day/staff planning in the afternoon

Tuesday, September 8th - First full day for all students

Hosting a reduced student population for the first two days will allow teachers to establish relationships and routines with your children. Our goal is to ensure that all students feel safe and comfortable as we welcome them back to school. Principals will be reaching out to you shortly with information on which day your child(ren) will begin school.

All middle and high school students will resume their education with a hybrid model, alternating in-person attendance on even/odd days with remote learning. This means that on the days that your child is not in class, periods 1-9 will be livestreamed for students participating from home. Our decision to livestream is a direct result of our survey, which determined that 70% of Roslyn parents preferred livestream classes (as opposed to asynchronous learning) for secondary students. Principals will be reaching out to you shortly to let you know if your child(ren) will attend on an odd or even numbered day. Please note that students who have chosen the Select Remote Learning option will begin classes on Thursday, September 3rd and continue forward.

Thursday, September 3rd Group 1/Odd Days (Day 1)

Friday, September 4th Group 2/Even Days (Day 2)

All teachers will be available for one designated period during the school day via Zoom. Students can meet with their own, or any other teacher in their content area, to ask questions and seek clarification. In addition, students will have access to their teachers via Zoom for any needed re-teaching during extra help time.

Schools will be closed 15 minutes after the last period. All after-school help and clubs will be conducted virtually.

After approximately two-weeks - once we have settled into a routine - we will evaluate our practices and make necessary adjustments based on the comfort and compliance levels of our students and staff. Keep in mind that our plans remain fluid and are subject to change at the direction of the state, and/or due to local circumstances.

During the next two weeks, the district will host a robust schedule of virtual meetings with all our building principals and administrators. The purpose of these meetings is to address more specific details about student schedules and protocols for each individual building. We have scheduled these meetings at a variety of different times throughout the day. Please note, each meeting will be recorded and emailed to you as well as posted to our district website.

In addition to the above mentioned building meetings, on Monday, August 17, 2020, we will also host two live meetings to explain the Select Remote Learning option and answer any questions you may have. This is specifically for parents who are opting their child out of live in-person instruction. These students will engage with all learning remotely. Only those parents who are strongly considering not sending their child(ren) into the school building for any in-person instruction need to participate in this meeting.
