PSO Fall Fest 2019

On Saturday, October 19 our community gathered for the annual PSO Fall Fest. This community potluck picnic was lead by Fall Fest Chairs Larissa La Matta and Sarah Scherschel. Many hours of preparation went into making this event successful.

Thank you to all of our families that volunteered their time setting up, managing the potluck stations and breaking down the event. Also thank you to the SCM High School students for painting many happy faces and monitoring the SCM Quiz table, and Nuri Nuri for his amazing play list.

The food was delicious, the weather was gorgeous, the children enjoyed the free play time and the adults enjoyed catching up with each other.

The Montessori Journey, held on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19, provided a unique opportunity for parents to experience Montessori education as a participant in the classroom. Designed by a Montessorian and guided by our faculty, parents were able to have a hands-on tour of each level from Infant Community through High School.

ADVANCING THE MISSION
Did you know that you could double (or even triple) your impact towards the SCM Fund?

Many companies support causes that are important to their employees by matching charitable gifts. Over the years, St. Catherine’s has received matching gifts from various companies and corporate foundations all thanks to parents and grandparents who maximized their impact by submitting their gift for corporate matching.

Click here to view a list of matching gift companies that have supported St. Catherine’s and other schools in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in recent years.

Ask your company about its matching gift program and help make your annual gift to the SCM Fund go twice as far!

HIGH SCHOOL CORNER
Welcome back to the High School Corner!

October marks a busy time for all of us, as fall is beginning and school is ramping up. It is also the time during which the High Schoolers reflect on and assess their work up to this point in the school year.

At the halfway point of each semester, students use a rubric to evaluate their work in each class they are taking. This rubric evaluates our knowledge and skills, engagement in class discussions and group projects, quality of work, and level of preparation and timeliness. After students have used the rubric to assess themselves in each class, our guides will evaluate our work using the same rubric. Then, in a private meeting, the guides present their assessments to us and explain the reasoning behind them. During these meetings, students discuss the grades they have given themselves, the grades the guides have given them, and, finally, strategies to improve their performance over the remainder of the semester.

This process is a great way to get an idea of how we’re doing and help us see which areas of our work require improvement before we receive our final grades at the end of the semester. Having an open dialogue with our guides about our work is extremely helpful and allows us to truly take ownership of our education. In December, guides and students will once again separately calculate grades for each class and then come together to discuss. The process is also repeated in March and May.

Click this link to view the rubric we use to guide our assessments.

Please feel free to contact the High School guides with further questions.

Thank you for reading this edition of the High School Corner!
