Voter Registration Week
This week is High School Voter Registration Week (HSVRW)! Bites Media has partnered with The Civics Center and 20 other national, state, and local groups to help high school students get registered to vote. Learn more about the effort and ways you can support students and democracy. NewseumEd Teacher Open House
Join NewseumEd for their final fall teacher open house on October 5. Learn about their free digital classes and content, attend special programs, explore exhibits, and take tours. Admission is free for educators and school and community librarians/media specialists.
Canadian Media Literacy Week:
Break the Fake
This year MediaSmarts is encouraging Canadian Media Literacy Week participants to Break the Fake and check information before sharing it online. A suite of free online resources is available for Media Literacy Week Collaborators and educators, including a Break the Fake workshop and lesson plans . Canadian Media Literacy Week takes place from October 7-11 and features activities and content from over 90 collaborating organizations. [ read more ]
Youth Media Network Virtual Summit
The Alliance Youth Media Network Virtual Summit is a series of activities which examines the question, “What is youth media?” The Summit includes a series of video roundtables on emerging practices in youth media, Instagram Live interviews with young adult artists and filmmakers, a Youth Media Screening, and more. The main Virtual Summit will take place from October 28 to November 15 and will unfold over Instagram, Zoom, and OVEE. Northeast Regional Media Literacy Conference
The Northeast Regional Media Literacy Conference will convene educators from across K-12, libraries, and higher education on November 8-9 in Providence, RI. This conference will give attendees the opportunity to explore and reflect on learning practices including inquiry, analysis, and composition for K-12, higher education, and learners of all ages. This is an immersive, two-day gathering designed to inspire, challenge, and equip educators, librarians, academics, researchers, and community media workers about the power and potential of media literacy. Free Virtual Classes with NewseumEd
Sign up for a live, virtual class with your students on media literacy and First Amendment topics led by NewseumEd teachers free of charge! All 11 classes will continue to be offered after the museum building closes on December 31. Check out the full list of classes and booking information here .
STEAM Project: Local Species Spotlight
Meridian Stories specializes in creative, curriculum-driven digital storytelling projects designed for middle and high school students. With over 125 projects in ELA, STEAM and history, the projects are designed to be incorporated into existing curricula and completed in small groups in approximately 2-4 weeks. Nobias was founded in 2017 with a mission to promote responsible and inclusive technology to protect consumers from deceptive or misleading content on the Internet. Nobias' free browser extension ( Chrome and Firefox ) empowers their customers by giving them information on bias and credibility to help them evaluate their news choices and ensure a more balanced information “diet” to burst their filter bubble. Free Lessons for the New School Year
Project Look Sharp has created new lessons on current issues designed to teach about “fake news,” credibility, confirmation bias, and other concepts that are essential for our students to navigate 21st Century media. To explore these free materials, use the advanced search function on their website to find resources by grade level, subject area, keyword, and standard.

KQED Wants to Hear from Your Students!
KQED’s Above the Noise will be producing election-specific videos leading up to the 2020 election, and they want to cover the topics that matter most to young people. Invite your middle or high school class to tell us what election issues they care about and why, and the twenty hottest topics will be picked and turned into Above the Noise videos you can show in your classroom.

Partnerships
New Curriculum:
KQED + Common Sense Education
KQED has partnered with Common Sense Education to integrate their award-winning Above the Noise media literacy series into Common Sense Education’s new digital citizenship curriculum for high schoolers. The two groups worked together to co-produce three new episodes of Above the Noise and incorporate KQED Learn resources into the Common Sense Education dig cit lessons. These resources are available for free.
