Come See What Makes Us So Special
SENIORS DEFINITELY WON’T BE BORED WITH THESE BOARD GAMES
Everyone at JSL loves to play games and at the same time realize major health benefits such as relieving stress and combating memory loss and depression. Studies have shown the risk of dementia was 15 percent lower in board game players than in non-players. Board games can enhance memory formation and help exercise cognitive skills. A lot of games also tend to be low stress and can be calming, helping lower blood pressure. In many instances, games require some coordination and hand dexterity, which can be important for aging adults.

MAN PLANS, GOD LAUGHS
By Jo Strausz Rosen
“ Mann Tracht, Un Gott Lacht” is an old Yiddish adage, “Man Plans, and God Laughs.” Adults assume the best-laid plans may be unhinged by unexpected changes, which can be either disappointing or exhilarating. Personal setbacks, losses of loved ones, illnesses, accidents or broken hearts are not uncommon. On the other hand, fate can bring unanticipated good fortune. We just don’t know what we will find around the next corner. Despite possible adversity, we are urged to think positively. Experience advises us that setbacks and tragedies, like comfort and prosperity, are naturally occurring. When confronted by misfortune, clichés abound, and we’re advised to “roll with the punches,” and “go with the flow.” Even in dark times, we know that “this too shall pass.” During a tough stint, we should remember that time heals. In periods of serenity, we should appreciate the good in our lives.

VOLUNTEERS… WE NEED YOU!!

Volunteering and its Surprising Benefits
With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. The right match at the right agency will connect you to friends, reduce stress, build community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. With passion and positivity, giving to others offers fulfillment and mental and physical well-being. By being social and giving back, you can combat depression and find happiness as well as increase your self-confidence. Experience a true sense of purpose and even get more physically fit. Bring your family and friends along with you, or simply show up on your own. Want to lower your blood pressure and bring joy to others as you obtain mental health yourself? Want to meet new people, make new friends, do something important with your time? Think about what brings you joy, what you are interested in, ie., hobbies, research, travel… and share this with others. Try something new and VOLUNTEER AT Jewish Senior Life.
