DC ADVOCACY
Red Meat Study Highlights Need for Physician Advocacy
The Annals of Internal Medicine paper published this week on red meat in diets highlights the need for physicians to be active in advocacy. Anyone who has read the public analysis not informed by medical professionals sees the misleading, confused, or inaccurate analysis that can come about when non-medical professionals need to interpret medical information. The same is true of advocacy–when health policy is made by non-physicians, the implications can be disastrous for physicians and patients. Get involved today to ensure physicians’ perspectives are included in policy debates–email hay@msdc.org to learn how.
MSDC Covers the Bases on DC Healthcare
Last Monday, Councilmember Vincent Gray joined the MSDC Board of Directors meeting to discuss his priorities for the remainder of the year. The Councilmember, who chairs the Committee on Health, urged MSDC members to advocate for more health facilities in Wards 7 and 8, and specifically outlined his view for what a new hospital on the St. Elizabeth’s campus should be. Learn more here .

MSDC worked with the Medical Professional Liability (MPL) Association to draft a letter to Mayor Muriel Bowser regarding the impact of liability on healthcare reform. The letter, seen here , outlined several opportunities to reform MPL and expand District residents' access to medical care.

Chemical Burn or Vaping-related Injury?
A Mayo Clinic physician published a letter in the New England Journal of Medicine shed new and disturbing light on the recent increase in vaping-related injury. The letter says that some vaping-related injuries resemble chemical burns .

Reuters reports the physicians ruled out lipoid pneumonia “as a probable explanation of how vaping harms the lungs, but the mystery over the exact cause only deepened.” The article says that lipioid pneumonia is “a rare diagnosis typically associated with people accidentally inhaling oils into their lungs,” which is how the CDC diagnosed five cases in a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report last month.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
This month is dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer, one of the most common kinds of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. Over 2,000 men are diagnosed each year as well. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has patient fact sheets and flyers for young women with breast cancer .
