Good morning!

Here's your Daily News for Thursday, October 24.
1. Two charged in girl's death
  • Police say they will charge two people with kidnapping and capital murder in the death of a 3-year-old Alabama girl whose body was found amid trash 10 days after being kidnapped outside a birthday party.
  • Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith said police were obtaining murder warrants against two people previously identified as persons of interest in the case: 39-year-old Patrick Devone Stallworth and his 29-year-old girlfriend, Derick Irisha Brown.
  • Kamille, who was affectionately known as Cupcake to her family, vanished on the evening of Oct. 12 while playing outside at the Tom Brown Village Housing Community. Photographs of the smiling toddler with the big brown eyes and hair adorned with colorful bows, were displayed on billboards across the South after an Amber Alert was issued. Her image filled people's social media feeds and prayer requests.
  • "I know there is an overwhelming amount of sadness. There is an overwhelming amount of pain, hurt, anger," a somber Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said at a Wednesday prayer vigil outside City Hall in Kamille's honor. "A little innocent 3-year-old girl ripped from her family ... we will never forget her name."
  • Birmingham announced plans to light City Hall in Kamille's favorite color: Purple.
  • Smith said investigators spent days combing through 12 tons of trash collected in and around the area before finding the body.

2. Marsh: Look at the 'big picture' on education
  • Next March, Alabama voters will consider a constitutional amendment to change the state's education governance from an elected school board to an appointed commission.
  • The move is being spearheaded by Sen. Del Marsh, who leads the State Senate as President Pro Tem.
  • Earlier this week, one of the current board members, Jackie Ziegler of Mobile, launched a campaign to urge citizens to vote no.
  • ADN's Caroline Beck caught up with Sen. Marsh to ask him about the amendment and other education policy issues.
  • Marsh told ADN that his desire to see the school board governance policy change is not a personal attack on anyone in particular, but he thinks the board is not functioning properly.
  • “I don’t know if it’s personalities, I can’t really say. But at the end of the day, we should all want what is best for the kids of this state and to produce the best education system we can.” Marsh said. “What we’ve got right now does not appear to be functioning and it’s definitely not giving us the results in education in terms of reading, mathematics, and ACT scores. It’s not happening.”

3. Wild day in Washington
  • Republicans briefly brought the Democrat-led impeachment investigation to a halt when around two dozen GOP House members stormed into a closed-door deposition with a Defense Department official.
  • The maneuver delayed a deposition with Laura Cooper, a senior Defense Department official who oversees Ukraine policy, until mid-afternoon. The interview began roughly five hours behind schedule, after a security check by Capitol officials, and ended after roughly four hours.
  • Democrats said the move compromised national security because some of the Republicans took electronic devices into a secure room.
  • Alabama Congressmen Bradley Byrne and Mo Brooks were right in the thick of it.
  • See their involvement and read more about the incident HERE.
4. Inmate stabbed in Alabama prison
  • An Alabama prison inmate was found with a stab wound to an eye last week and died several minutes after a correctional officer found him bleeding amid a group of fellow inmates, authorities said Wednesday.
  • The Department of Corrections said in a statement that 52-year-old William Stanley Warren was stabbed Thursday at Ventress Correctional Facility in Clayton.
  • Warren was serving a life sentence for a 1994 murder conviction in Marshall County.
  • The statement said a correctional officer noticed Warren bleeding about 5 p.m. that day as he approached him and other inmates around him dispersed. Warren was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later by medical personal transporting him to a hospital, the statement added.

Fire alert lifted for all 67 counties after rains

  • MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The state forester has lifted a fire alert for Alabama after rainfall across the state.
  • State Forester Rick Oates this week lifted the fire alert that had been in place for all 67 counties in Alabama.
  • The fire alert and burn restrictions were put in place in September.
  • Dry conditions had led to a number of wildfires across the state, including a 365-acre (147-hectare) fire in Sumter County and a 122-acre (49-hectare) fire in Shelby County.
  • The Alabama Forestry Commission said scattered rainfall over most of the state during the past week has brought much needed relief. The commission has resumed issuing permits for outdoor burning.

Former Alabama officer arrested on assault charge

  • MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A former south Alabama police officer has been arrested on a charge of assaulting a prisoner.
  • News outlets report that former Citronelle police officer Jason Meade was book into the Mobile County Metro Jail on an assault charge on Wednesday.
  • Citronelle Mayor Jason Stringer says he fired Meade earlier this month after seeing video of a confrontation between Meade and a man who had been arrested for an old traffic violation.
  • The man who was arrested, Bryant King, told WALA-TV the officer attacked him after he repeatedly asked for a blanket in jail.
  • Court records aren't available to show whether Meade has an attorney to speak on his behalf. He has also worked as an officer at several other departments around Mobile.

Alabama church secretary arrested on theft charge

  • DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama woman is charged with embezzling about $25,000 from the church where she worked as a secretary.
  • News outlets report that 63-year-old Donna Renee Hall of Columbia surrendered Wednesday on a theft charge.
  • Investigator Scott Spivey says the arrest came after Cloverdale United Methodist Church in Dothan notified police that money was missing.
  • He says the money went missing over a 15-month period, starting last year when Hall worked at the church. Spivey says she used the church's credit card and also wrote checks to herself.
  • Court records don't show a defense lawyer who could speak on Hall's behalf.
