This was the prayer composed by Fr. Pat for last Sunday:
Gracious and Loving God, we thank you for giving us the freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We thank you for setting us at tasks that bring your Kingdom closer in our world. We confess that because of blindness, apathy, and fear we often turn away from your will for us. We have different understandings about many issues in our world, Lord, so we ask you to help us remember that we are called to be united not in our opinions but in our common faith. Give us wisdom in our disagreements about how to order our society, especially as we struggle with the freedom to own guns, so that as followers of Jesus we can work together for the good of all people. Give us wisdom about how we are to be good citizens in our city, our state, and our country, all the while remembering our call from Jesus to be salt and light to the world. Give us wisdom about how we are to live out our faith every day, remembering Jesus’ call to care for the widow, orphan, and stranger among us. You do not wish for your children to suffer, and so we pray that you will help us understand how we make our world safe, and just, and compassionate, all the while keeping our eyes fixed on You, united in our worship of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let's Rally and Rise Against Hunger
Sunday, September 8
This year’s Rally Day will see a different focus and intentionality. In sharing our gratitude, we are partnering with Rise Against Hunger to package over 10,000 meals in under 2 hours.
Following the Rally Day lunch, parishioners ages 5-105 are invited to participate in the Rise Against Hunger meal packing event. Younger volunteers can serve as runners. Adults and teens will serve at funnel stations, unloading food, boxing food, and weighing packages. There are even sit-down jobs at the sealing stations for those who cannot stand for long periods of time. Childcare is available for kids under age 5.

Just in Time for Rally Day!
As a fundraiser for our Rally Day mission project, the youth group will be selling Rally Day T-shirts in a choice of colors: Coal gray, Peacock green, Walnut, and Neon Coral. Adult and children’s sizes are available (sorry, the Walnut color is not available in children’s sizes). We have set a goal of selling 300 t-shirts! Shirts will be $15 each. The profit from any shirts sold above the fundraising need of our Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event will benefit the Youth Mission Fund.
Deadline to order a shirt is THIS TUESDAY, and shirts will be available the week before Rally Day. If you wish to support our fundraiser without the purchase of a t-shirt, we will of course welcome your donation. Email GiGi at
gigi@knoxvilleascension.org.

Recruiting Prayer Partners
|
|
Prayer Partners is a ministry that pairs an Ascension teen with an adult parishioner in the church who will pray for that teen and exchange monthly letters, hopefully building relationships between our teens and the wider church. Last year we had three pairings of Prayer Partners and teens. This year we hope to double that! This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with a young person and support our youth one-on-one. To sign up an adult or teen, a written sign-up will be on the reception desk of the church office, or you can contact GiGi (
gigi@knoxvilleascension.org) with any questions.

Dinner Angels is a program in which parents and other parishioners are invited to serve dinners to our youth as a fellowship and service opportunity. Want to try out a new recipe? Have a flair in the kitchen? Just willing to feed a small crowd? We welcome home-cooked meals and catered meals. We welcome and encourage our dinner angels to attend youth group with us after serving. Our Fall 2019 schedule is live! Check out our sign-ups, details, and schedule:

Foyer Groups are one of Ascension’s long-standing fellowship ministries. Groups of about 8 people meet in each other’s homes about once a month for six months, share a simple meal, and just get to know each other in a comfortable setting. The Spring/Summer rotation is coming to an end and the Fall/Winter groups will be formed in September. To that end, please see the following:
- If you have participated in this current (Spring/Summer) rotation and would like to be assigned to a new group for Fall/Winter, you do not have to do anything. You will be included in a new group automatically.
- If you have participated in this current rotation but do not wish to be included in the Fall/Winter one, please notify Bettie Corey at bcorey41@comcast.net by September 9. If she does not hear from you, you will be assigned to a new group.
- If you have never been in a foyer group or if you have not been active in this current rotation and would like to rejoin, please notify Bettie at bcorey41@comcast.net by September 9. Please include your name (and, if a couple, both names), a telephone number, and your e-mail address.

August Outings
During the hot month of August 2019, the Ascension Trekkers will strive to stay cool by hiking to or beside water for as many dips or soaks as may be needed. The second hike will be on Saturday, August 17, at 8:30 am when Trekkers will drive to near Waynesville, NC to explore Flat Creek Trail from Heintooga Ridge Road. The Trekkers have not had this 5.3 moderate mile hike on their agenda but the descriptions are impressive: lush, gorgeous, Hobbit-Like are a few of the adjectives. Depending on rainfall prior to the hike, there may be some streams to be rock-hopped and some damp logs. RSVP's are requested ahead of time so transportation needs can be anticipated. Contact

Ellen and David Lovett have shared their wonderful Pesto Pasta recipe, which will be our entry. Each congregation is asked to provide the following:
- 2 desserts for the silent auction. They should be homemade and can include breakfast rolls, pies, cakes, or a dozen specialty cupcakes.
- 3 dozen cookies or brownies bagged into individual servings sizes. We will sell these for $1.00 each. Carefully label if they have nuts of any kind.
- 4 people to serve our pasta. I am not sure which shift we will have but you will serve for about 45 minutes.
- 2 people to help me with the judges.
Please contact me if you can do any of these jobs - bring a dessert, bring a dozen cookies, serve or help with the judges. Email me,
aoconnor1309@gmail.com, or call at 865-567-1469. This event is always so special as we experience a diverse community working together for a common goal, Ann O’Connor.
