City Council Meeting Rebroadcasts
Due to the start of the new City Hall project, City Council meetings will be held in Davis Hall beginning September 3.

City staff and a contractor are relocating audio-visual equipment from City Hall to Davis Hall and therefore the scheduled re-broadcast of Council meetings will not be possible between August 16 and September 3. The slides on the cable channels will continue to be broadcast, with the exception of a 24 hour period (to be scheduled) during the last week of August.

We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.
Business of the Year Recognition Program
College Park’s growing and vibrant business community is full of unsung heroes who provide well-paying jobs for our residents, develop creative solutions to everyday problems, and take care of the community that they call home.

To show our appreciation for these outstanding businesses and their positive impacts on our community, the City has recently developed a Business of the Year recognition program. The program is designed to highlight the contributions of one particularly outstanding business each year.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to nominate their favorite businesses for the reward. The winning business will be announced in October and will receive a plaque to place in their establishment.

Nominations are accepted via the online web form on our website now through August 31, 2019. For details or to nominate a business, visit www.collegeparkmd.gov/econdev .
A WEEK IN REVIEW
Department of Public Works
Electrical circuits being installed in Davis Hall for the AV room and Council preparations.

Coordinating a new fence in the Compost requested by PGBOE for the Dog Park to be installed next week.

As part of the stipulations to build the College Park Dog Park from Prince George’s County Board of Education, a fence is required on the north end and east side of the leased compost yard. A survey was held and now fence installation may begin.

In coordination with the City's Safety and Risk Specialist, the Department installed AEDs in all City buildings.

We received 648 lbs of food scraps just this week; since April we have diverted over 4 tons of food scraps! If you would like to start diverting your food scraps, the Department has 5-gallon food scrap buckets available. The buckets are useful to transport collected food scraps to the drop off location.

MDA Mosquito Control Program
  • The City cooperates with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) to identify and control mosquito populations. The program consists of:
  • Larviciding standing water; treatments are made by MDA personnel to known areas of standing water to control mosquito larva preventing their development into adult mosquitoes. MDA does this every 4-6 weeks.
  • Spraying to control adult mosquitoes has begun and goes through early September. Spraying for adult mosquitoes may occur in College Park (weather permitting) after dusk on Wednesday evenings by truck mounted ultra-low volume sprayers. MDA does not spray individual properties; they treat neighborhoods that meet certain thresholds.
  • Prince George’s County Health Department reminds residents to follow the three D’s to keep mosquitoes away:
  • Drain: Standing water attracts mosquitoes. Empty out any outside water containers near your home at least once per week
  • Dress: Dark clothing attracts mosquitoes. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Defend: Properly apply an EPA-registered repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR 3535, or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. For permanent areas of standing water (ponds, rain barrels, etc), contact the City's Department of Public Works for a mosquito torpedo which releases an insect growth regulator in water that prevents adult mosquito development.
  • To report areas of heavy mosquito populations, go to the following link and provide your information http://www.doit.state.md.us/selectsurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=740Kl54#
  • Request for Exemption from Adult Mosquito Control Services:
  • Any resident who wishes to have his/her property excluded from adult mosquito control pesticide applications by truck-mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) sprayers must fill out this form annually. Click here for application.
  • For more information, please visit www.collegeparkmd.gov/pets#mosquitoes.

  • Tree Canopy Enhancement Program (TCEP) on Private Property: The City has a program to reimburse the cost (up to $150.00) of approved trees on private property. Click here for more information and application.
