Welcome Back!
Message from Ms. Mangels
CMS Parents-

Hello CMS Dragons!!!  We are so excited to get the school year rolling in just a few short days!  I want to apologize in advance for the length of this newsletter, but PLEASE take a few minutes to read it so you will have valuable information for the beginning of school.  It will be worth a few minutes of your time to help you and your middle schooler be prepared for the first day!

Dress Code:
Parents, please help us by monitoring your child's outfit each day.  You can find the CMS Dress Code in the Student Handbook posted on our website under  "Information".   Here are a few of the main points:  *Shorts and skirts must be longer than fist length, with arms down to the side.  *Tank tops are not allowed, but "sleeveless" tops that extend to the shoulder are fine.  *Undergarments, (including bra straps) are not to be visible at any time. Please review the full Dress Code in the Student Handbook.  Students who are 'out of dress code' will be given shorts or sweat pants and a t-shirt from the nurse's clinic to wear for the remainder of the school day.

******Traffic Drop-off & Pick-Up Info:  Please read these guidelines completely to help avoid frustrations.

If all parents will follow these guidelines the line will stay in motion - which will result in a quicker process.  The first couple of weeks may be somewhat slow as everyone figures it out.   Here are the key guidelines:

1)    For morning drop-off,  as you turn on to the campus, stay in the  far right lane  and pull forward along the front curb.  Students need to enter and exit the car on the curb side.  In the mornings, please pull up to the second crosswalk before stopping (there will be a teacher on duty there after 8:00).  This allows more cars to reach the "front" curb area where students can be let out.  If parents all stop right outside the front door instead of pulling forward, fewer cars will be able to reach the front curb to drop off...therefore it will take longer.

2)  In the afternoons everyone is in line at basically the same time, so the line will be much longer and slower.  Please be patient.  It takes a few minutes for students to go by their lockers after school before they even make it out front, so if you can come around 3:50, the line will be shorter.  We will be loading hundreds of students as quickly as possible, but we really need your help to ensure the line continues to move.  We ask parents to pull ALL THE WAY up - as far as you can - along the curb.  We will be able to fit MANY cars along that front curb IF everyone will pull forward.  If there is a big open space between you and the car in front of you and you stop wherever you see your child, we will motion for you to move forward and will ask your student to walk that direction for pick-up.

3)  If you need to park and come in to the school (either during drop-off or pick-up times), or if your student has a large instrument or armloads of things to bring in, you're welcome to pull into the parking lot and park to give your student more time to get things ready to get out (or in).

4)  ALL access to the front parking lot is on the west end.  This means you will need to "circle" around past the front of the school and enter the parking lot from the far end.  No one will be able to access that lot at the east end....it will be blocked off.  The reason for this is to keep the traffic flowing...if that end is "open", it REALLY clogs up all vehicle entrance to the property.  If you are going to pull around and park, you may use the inside lane as you circle through.  You do not need to wait in the curbside lane.  Again, please help us out by following all guidelines...and be patient.  I promise you we will be working to get all cars through as quickly as we can.  Having all parents pull forward as far as possible will help tremendously!  Thank you in advance for your help!

5)  All drivers must turn right when leaving the parking lot (during drop-off and pick-up).  While this may pose a slight "inconvenience" for those who wish to turn left, this procedure is critical for smooth traffic flow and movement  in our carpool process.  Please help us out by following procedure.

I apologize again for the length of this message, but I wanted to share this important information.  Have a wonderful weekend!  I'm so excited to get our new dragons here on Monday!  It's gonna be a fantastic year!  Go Dragons!

Elective Schedule Change Request Procedure
August 19- 23
If you would like a first semester elective to be changed, you will need to complete an electronic schedule change request form.  The form can be found by going to the CMS Web page, clicking on the Counseling Tab and then the Back To School Link on the Left Side of the Page.  The link will open at 4:00 p.m., Monday, August 19 and remain open through 8:00 a.m. Friday, August 23.

We will only accept request for the 1st semester electives. 2nd semester requests will be accepted prior to the 2nd semester.  We will not move CORE classes to place you in an elective.

*****We are unable to accommodate lunch schedule changes.  We request that parents not contact counselors via phone or email for schedule changes as this will delay the process.

Band to perform at National Festival
Congratulations to Wind Ensemble for being selected as a 2020 Music for All National Festival performing group.  As one of only 12 middle schools in the nation to be invited, CMS will be performing on this national stage during Spring Break 2020 in Indianapolis.

The invitation to perform at this festival is extended only to middle school band programs who have met a high performance standard, which was evaluated via recorded submission at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.  Even though it will be this year's Wind Ensemble that will represent the CMS Band program at the festival in March, the opportunity wouldn't be possible without the tremendous contribution from last year's 8th grade class - thank you so much for your consistent leadership and musicianship throughout the 2018-2019 school year.  The CMS Band staff couldn't be more proud of the hard work and dedication put forth by all of our young musicians to make this opportunity a reality.  We would also like to extend our never-ending appreciation to our band parents and families for their incredible support of the CMS Band program.

Here is a little information about the Music for All National Festival:
Middle school ensembles attending the Music for All National Festival can expect an exhilarating and educationally rewarding experience. Students have the opportunity to participate in a master class with a noted professional performer on their instrument and also have the opportunity to listen to other middle school and high school bands, orchestras and percussion ensembles from all over the nation. Ensembles are evaluated in a non-competitive environment. Each receives a post-concert clinic, a student social, special opening session and Gala Awards Banquet for the middle school participants.
