THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER

What does the Book of Common Prayer say concerning the service of the Church?  The Holy Eucharist, the principle act of Christian worship on the Lord's Day and other major Feasts, and Daily Morning and Evening Prayer, as set forth in this book, are the regular services appointed for public worship of this Church.page 13


Curate's Corner

Today, the Episcopal Church commemorates Jonathan Daniels, martyred in 1965. He participated in the Civil Rights Movement and went to my hometown of Selma Alabama to march with Dr. Martin Luther King from Selma to Montgomery. Rather than going back home to Boston to continue his seminary education at the Episcopal Theological Seminary he decided to stay in Selma and continue working for the movement. During this work he was arrested and jailed in Hayneville Alabama.   After his release on August 20th, along with other members of the movement they entered a local shop, and were met at the door by a man with a shotgun who told them to leave or be shot. After a brief confrontation, he aimed the gun at a young girl in the party, and Jonathan pushed her out of the way and took the blast from the shotgun himself .
 
O God of justice and compassion, you put down the proud and the mighty from their place, and lift up the poor and afflicted: We give you thanks for your faithful witness Jonathan Myrick Daniels, who, in the midst of injustice and violence, risked and gave his life for another; and we pray that we, following his example, may make no peace with oppression; through Jesus Christ the just one: who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Treasurer's Two Cents
What a busy and exciting year. It began with hiring a new thrift store manager and a choir director, both of whom have immediately gotten to their tasks and are making a real difference.  The Rector Search Committee has spent many hours in considering candidates and doing "face to face" interviews across the Internet; soon selected candidates will journey here for closer consideration. And our school has a new Interim Head of School and the school year has been happily launched. 
Our Rectory has been subjected to lots of maintenance and improvements and now virtually glows! None of this good news came without some costs beyond what we had hoped and budgeted. Nevertheless, all of it rises to the level of wise investments in our future. Our leadership folks have really been doing a splendid job.
And there is more: overall we are ahead on our pledges, thanks to some members who paid ahead before taking vacations and others who just like to help us keep ahead of our cash needs. The Rectory improvements were generously supported by the time, talent and treasure of a dedicated parishioner. And we were gloriously successful in raising $3000 for the Samaritan Counseling Center.
We do not consider stewardship only in the Fall. It is a year-round focus in how we prioritize our investments in program and property and how we consider where to direct our giving. At any moment you might be inspired! (Did you know "inspired" means having the Holy Spirit breathed into you?) Inhale and give from your heart.

A Message from Holy Nativity Interim Head of School


Aloha and Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year.

We have been working together to prepare for an excellent year for your child(ren) at Holy Nativity School. As a newcomer to HNS, I would like to share some encouraging observations of the Holy Nativity School community with you:

  • We are blessed with a dedicated faculty. These exceptional professionals are committed to your child's growth and learning and are committed to sustaining HNS. They are a caring and supportive team who have fashioned a great program for each student.
  • We are blessed with a beautiful campus. Our campus is thoughtfully planned and designed to provide space for physical and social growth, as well as space to retreat and thoughtfully practice mindfulness.
  • We are blessed with a focus on the whole child. At HNS children are known and seen-as intellectual, physical and spiritual beings. We gather as a school to start the week with prayer, and provide have personalized learning that includes weekly chapel.
  • We are blessed with engaged parents. HNS is a place where parent involvement is welcomed. We thrive as a community who work together to make our student experience exceptional.

These many blessings and our 70th anniversary are the reason this year's theme is The Best of HNS. We
encourage you to engage in all the year has to offer. Be sure to attend Parent Orientation next Wednesday, August 14 at 5:30 PM. Mark your calendar now to help with or attend the Great Pumpkin Festival on Saturday October 19 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. And keep abreast of the many other events this school year buy reading this newsletter every week.
