Coach Masterclass: Chapter 16 - Sportsmanship & Ethical Decision Making
Chapter 16 of our Coach Masterclass focuses on Sportsmanship and Ethical Decision Making.

This chapter includes interviews with three coaches who are held in high regard for their sportsmanship and integrity. They provide some insights into the consequences for poor sportsmanship, how to foster a culture of integrity and how to maintain the highest ethical standards while winning conference and national championships.

This chapter also includes a link to the ITA rulebook. Coaches would be well served familiarizing themselves with ITA rules or at least have a the rulebook on hand during dual matches.

  • A few coaches expressed concerns about the announcement regarding the alliance between the ITA and USTA. It is important to note that the ITA and USTA have worked together on initiatives in the past. This agreement formalizes those arrangements and creates some new opportunities while ensuring no duplication of tasks takes place between the ITA & USTA. The paragraph regarding coach certification in no way means that there will be any type of mandate for college coaches to become certified coaches. The USTA is working hard to raise the standards of coaching across the country and hope a coaching certification will become a tennis industry standard (clubs, academies, park facilities etc.) as it is in most other developed countries. Personally, I believe that if you are coaching camps, clinics, or private lessons that having a coaching certification is important. Approximately 50% of college coaches are already certified.
