Voices Strengthened Through Art: The Universal Language, is on display in The Gallery at Three Rivers from February 16 - March 16.
This exhibition features photographs of alumni of the Three Rivers Visual Fine Arts Program with their personal stories of the positive impact studying art has had on their lives. It also includes selections of their artwork in a variety of mediums. Featured alumni artists are Jacob Cullers, Mary Pollard, Becky Maynard, Sarah Heikkinen, Samantha Sealy and Gordon Arzu.

It has been a whirlwind of a semester. Between updates on the consolidation, the legislative breakfast, and a plethora of student activities, Three Rivers has been "hopping!"
Now, everyone can take a breath and enjoy a quiet week of spring break before diving into the rest of the semester.

 Consolidation a hot topic at Legislative Breakfast
Faculty and staff were joined by President Mark Ojakian and Sean Bradbury, Director of Government Relations, both from CSCU, a
nd legislators:
State Senator Cathy Osten; State Representatives Holly Cheeseman and
Mike France
; Brianna DeVivo, Office of Congressman Joe Courtney; and Emily Boushee, Office of Senator Murphy. The conversation centered primarily around the upcoming CSCU consolidation.

Gender Neutral Bathroom is Complete!
Students showed CSCU President Ojakian the newly completed gender neutral bathroom on February 28. The single-stall bathroom is available to everyone and is located on the first floor near the intersection of C and D wing.

Youth Count Survey a Success!
Three Rivers was a successful participant in the Youth Count Survey as part of the 2018 CT Coalition to End Homelessness. Over the course of a week in several locations throughout the College, over 160 students were "counted" and four were referred on to Student Support Specialist Sharon Lincoln, the point person for homeless students on campus. Her role is to ensure that students have access to resources that will help them be successful students. This includes connecting them with the food pantry, scholarships, off-campus resources and more.

Great Turnout for Semin
ar on "Yes, You Can Afford College."
On February 13, Kenneth Briggs, Director of Financial Aid, and Ed Muenzner, Professor of Accounting, spoke to a packed room of 100 people from the community on how to best utilize financial aid as well as how to take advantage of educational tax breaks.

Three Rivers Experiences a Performance by Grammy-Nominee Shoji Kameda
Kameda gave audiences the opportunity to experience the impact, depth, and diversity of taiko on February 12 as he performed, discussed his musical journey and answered questions from audience members.
Taiko drumming is a dynamic musical art form that uses powerful rhythms and is practiced around the world with a broad range of Japanese percussion instruments. Its cultural heritage originates in Japan where it has been used as a form of communication throughout history as well as in religious ceremonies and theatrical accompaniment.

Winter Ball Raises $3,087!
The Oscar-themed Winter Ball was filled with dancing and fun. A total of $3,087 was raised for departmental scholarships.

Performance of "The Vagina Monologues"
Students Advocating Gender Equality performed "The Vagina Monologues" on February 23. Based on interviews with over 200 women, The Vagina Monologues celebrates female sexuality and strength with humor and grace. Admission to the show was $5 and all proceeds benefited the Sexual Assault Crisis Center of Eastern Connecticut, as well as the Spotlight Campaign: The Resistance.

Narcan Trainings
Two training sessions were available on February 8 and 14 for those interested in learning how to administer the drug Narcan, used to treat those who have overdosed on opioids.
This training was funded by the CHCI-Connecticut Healthy Campus Initiative grant for raising awareness around the growing opioid epidemic in Southeastern Connecticut. Learn more about the training here.

All College Meeting
On February 14, faculty and staff gathered for an All College Meeting filled with College updates. Interim Dean Ice announced the creation of a new degree program, Certified Clinical
Medical Assistant, A.S., that will begin this fall. He also spoke to the hard work that was being done to bring more degree programs online.

Foundation Monies at Work
The Three Rivers College Foundation supported the following projects:
Nursing Department iClickers
The Nursing department's request for $2,500 to purchase 50 student iClickers and 2 instructor kits has been approved. The iClicker is a device that allows instructors to pose a question/scenario to the entire class and gather answers from every student. The professor can utilize this data to assess students' preparedness and tailor instruction to fill learning gaps.
Community Health Clinic at St. Vincent de Paul
The Nursing department was awarded $25,000 from the Paul Jones Fund to support a health clinic site at St. Vincent de Paul in Norwich. The program has proved to be incredibly successful. The original request did not sufficiently cover the costs of a site preceptor. An additional $5,000 was approved to support this initiative.
Guided Pathways to Success Summer Scholarships
The GPS committee's request of $50,000 to support summer scholarships for 2018 was approved. The pilot program last summer was incredibly successful with a 91% completion rate, 86% summer-fall retention rate, and 47% graduation rate.

On February 15, Megan  Ory testified before the CT Appropriations Committee representing CSCU and Three Rivers.
President Ojakian thanked her and other CSCU students who testified and acknowledged the impact their testimony made: "
The stories about what their colleges and universities mean to them deeply moved the members of the committee."

Congratulations to Three Rivers art student,
Sam Day. She was the winner of a highly competitive and prestigious exhibition, the Community Exhibition and Transfer Scholarship held by Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. As the winner, she received full tuition for four years, worth approximately $36,000 per year. Her winning art was exhibited along with other exceptional student work at the Donald and Linda Silpe Gallery at the University. This competition was open to all Connecticut Community College students and Sam is the first Three Rivers student to win. While we will miss her here at TRCC, we wish her the best next fall at Hartford Art School.
