City Slickers
, Mitch (Billy Crystal) and two of his longtime friends face a mid-age crisis in which they find themselves losing their focus and are in danger of losing their families. To reignite the fire in their lives the trio sign up as “cowboys” on a cattle drive, helping a dude ranch move its herd of cattle from high in the hills down to the lower valley.
Curly (Jack Palance), the grizzled old cowboy who leads them, seems to be the toughest, shrewdest, wisest person they have ever met. Curly realizes why Mitch is on the trip and confronts him about it. Mitch asks the usually tight-lipped cowpoke what his secret is; What makes his life so strong, centered, and sure. Curly responds with "Do you know what the secret to life is? and raises his grubby, gloved index finger and proclaims "This". Mitch looks puzzled and asks, "Your finger?" Curly responds "One thing, just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don't mean anything.” When Mitch asks what that means Curly replies with "That’s what you gotta figure out" and then he rides away.
Mitch spends the rest of the movie struggling to figure out what Curly meant. What IS that “just one thing?”
How many of us get to points in our life where we have lost focus and are looking for that one thing, that secret to life? In his letters to the ancient church, St Paul was clear in what he believed was the one thing, that secret of life - Christ Jesus: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God."

Faith and Justice Conversation
This Sunday August 18th
What does it mean to seek justice as people of faith? How do we follow our baptismal vow to strive for justice and peace, and what might that look like in our own community? Join us after worship on Sunday, August 18th for a conversation on Faith and Justice, where we will explore these questions and others as we discuss what it might look like to work for justice in our world in concrete ways. Understandably, many of our newer members aren't familiar with this long-time, faithful member of Holy Cross, but those who know and love him are invited to stop by for a little cake and lots of HUGS!
Please be advised, parking is minimal at the main Glenbrook entrance, but much is available across the street at the FORUM shopping center or behind the building. Let's celebrate!

Pride by the Beach

This event is a powerful way for Holy Cross to reach out to the LGBTQ+ community, which includes many who have been wounded by religious organizations, and let them know of God's plan for all to know love and be loved.
How you can help
: We need volunteers at the booth to greet attendees, give free hugs, and let people know that Holy Cross welcomes all. The event runs from 11 am to 5 pm and set-up starts at 8 am. We ask you to prayerfully consider donating 2 hours of your time on Saturday October 12th. You will find a sign-up sheet in the Tietge Room to staff our booth. ... all who donated to our August Outreach Ministry, backpacks for St Mark's Back2School Bash. The Backpacks will be filled with school supplies and provided to local refugee and low-income children in grades K-12. Your generous donations provided 13 backpacks and $100 that will be donated to St Mark's to use for additional supplies or backpacks that may be needed. Thank you to Grant who will deliver the backpacks to St Mark's today.
Last Sunday, we blessed the backpacks and our Holy Cross Children returning to school along with backpack tags with a prayer to attach to their own backpacks.
Lord our God,

send your Spirit upon all students
and fill them with your wisdom.
Guide and protect them from every danger.

It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." We hope this email is salt and light in your inbox each week.
Listening Sessions
Dear Friends in Christ,
What is God calling us to become, here in the Diocese of San Diego? How are we called to love God and love our neighbors in a time of change and division in our society? In a world where church attendance is no longer a social expectation, how do we proclaim by word and example the good news of Christ?
These are the questions I want to discern with you as we enter this first autumn season of my episcopacy. I believe that God has given the Episcopal Church many challenges and also many opportunities in our beautiful part of the world. Together, we can pray, discuss, and discern how to follow Jesus in his mission to our communities.
I invite you to begin this discernment process with me: what are we called to do and how are we called to do it? This discernment will happen in three stages:
1.
Pray
. For each of nine days, from September 14 through September 22, I ask you to pray in faith that God will open us to vibrant possibilities for mission, focused in ministry areas of discipleship, evangelism and service. By God’s grace, I believe that the fruits of this season of prayer will be known in our lives, in the congregations and organizations that we serve, and for the mission and ministry of the diocese.
This prayer guide
offers focus scriptures, prayers, and reflection questions for each of the nine days of this Season of Prayer. You may download the guide and print it for your congregation; study it in congregational gatherings or home study groups; or use it in your personal devotions. I pray that the Holy Spirit inspires us all with ideas and insights about God’s call to us here and now.

Listening Sessions.
I invite you to take part in listening sessions to be held around the diocese the week of September 23 through September 30. These listening sessions are part of my work in getting to know the diocese more completely. With the help of an outside facilitator who will moderate the sessions I will listen to your thoughts about opportunities for community building, your hopes, dreams, and concerns that will lead us into clearer discernment around God’s call to us and our ministry in our communities.
Following are the locations for the listening sessions,
scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m.
each night. While there is no cost to attend the listening sessions, please register online so that we can plan the sessions accordingly.

- Tuesday, September 24: All Saints, San Diego
- Wednesday, September 25: St. Andrew’s La Mesa
- Thursday, September 26: All Saints, Vista
- Friday, September 27: St. Paul’s, Palm Springs

We will share what we learn through the listening sessions at the
diocesan convention
on November 8-9 so we can hear your feedback on the results.

Plan.
The results of the listening sessions will form the basis for a new strategic plan for our diocese that develop beginning in January 2020. The Executive Council has formed a subgroup that is busy gathering data to prepare for the January 2020 start time for a strategic planning committee. A full strategic plan will be created by July 2020, and we will present that plan to the diocese in August 2020. The plan we create will form the basis for our ministry for the next five years.
Throughout this development and staging time, defining who the diocese is and where God calls this body to go, hope prevails and Jeremiah says, “'For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 12:11). Jeremiah reminds us that God dreams of a more abundant future for us than we can dream of for ourselves, and that planning for our future as a diocese is work that is grounded in prayer, discernment, and holy discussion with other Christians, and a sincere desire to accomplish God’s vision for us.
Please join me in helping to discern God’s dream for the Diocese of San Diego today.

The School for Ministry (SFM) is a theological training program for anyone interested in learning more about Hebrew Scriptures, Christian Scriptures, church history, liturgics, pastoral care, global Anglicanism and more. It is open to all adult learners: people considering ordained ministry, as well as people interested in deepening their knowledge and understanding of these topics.

Have you ever questioned your religious beliefs? Have you ever wondered why we believe what we believe, or how those beliefs came about? Have you ever read or heard a particular passage of Scripture (or read one whole book of Scripture straight through) and wondered what the author was trying to tell you, what it means to you, now? Have you pondered some of the touchy issues of today and couldn’t connect the issue with your faith? Have you wondered how God is calling you to fulfill your baptismal promises to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ, to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself, and to strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being? It’s daunting, isn’t it? But, perhaps Education for Ministry (EfM) can help.
EfM is a program for lay people to help them to better understand their faith and church and to prepare for the ministry to which she or he is called. This is the vocation for which we pray at the end of the Eucharist: "And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord."
EfM consists of a series of 4 one-year classes that explore the Hebrew Scriptures, the New Testament, Church History, and Modern Theology. Through reading, discussion and reflection, students gain a greater understanding of our Christian tradition and how they personally fit into it. Reflection tools also help students examine the world around us in light of our tradition and personal beliefs. There’s a lot of reading but there are no tests or written reports. Each student determines what he or she get out of EfM.
St Andrew's Episcopal Church, Encinitas, has invited members of Holy Cross to join them in their EfM group. The St. Andrew’s EfM group meets weekly on Friday mornings from 9 am to 11 am, starting in September and continuing through May each year. The group is generally a multi-year group; those studying years 1-4 all meet together. This group diversity makes for lively conversations that incorporate the insights gained from students’ encounters with Scripture, church history and theology. The goal is not agreement, but to help each student clarify his/her own beliefs and positions, and what God means in their life.
