Rest in Peace: Mary Maud Sadler
1919 - 2019
With heavy hearts, we write to inform you that Mary Maud Mitchell Sadler, age 100, died peacefully Monday, July 22. She was at her home in Point Loma, surrounded by family.
Mary Maud was born in San Diego in 1919, a third generation San Diegan. Her grandparents attended St. Paul's Church, which later became St. Paul's Cathedral, and her father sang in the boys' choir in the early 1900s.
She attended Stanford University, and married the Rev. Canon C. Boone Sadler, Jr. in 1942. He was one of the founders of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego. She devoted the rest of her life to supporting his ministry. She taught school, led youth groups, provided hospitality, oversaw parish libraries, and much more.
The Sadlers lived in La Mesa for 11 years during which time Father Sadler worked at St. John's, Bostonia, and St. Andrew's, La Mesa. In 1953 they moved to La Crescenta where Father Sadler served St. Luke's. After 62 years, they retired to San Diego. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before Father Sadler passed away at age 92.
Mary Maud is survived by her three daughters, Rachel Anne Mueller (Richard) of Carmel, California; Genevieve James of Westminster, Colorado; and Betsy Northam (Jack) of San Diego.
Father Sadler, supported by Mary Maud, worked fastidiously to found and establish our diocesan camp in Julian, Camp Stevens.
A requiem eucharist will take place on
Saturday, August 3, at 11 a.m. at All Souls'
1475 Catalina Boulevard, San Diego.
