Recycling our roads: Full-depth reclamation
Full-depth reclamation (FDR), a new paving process, is in use for the first time in Washington County on Mountain Home Road.

FDR involves pulverizing old asphalt and base materials together and mixing them with a cement slurry. The mixture is compacted into a strong road base and paved with asphalt. Unlike typical paving and overlay work, the FDR process addresses subgrade issues, creating a stronger, more durable road. The final product is a “recycled” road that strengthens with age. It is also more resistant to moisture and more cost effective than a road paved with traditional methods.

In addition, FDR work does not require a road closure; one lane of traffic can remain open during the work. However, heavy trucks are not allowed on the road until final paving is complete.

The FDR process is ideal for roadways that require extensive pavement repairs and/or have subgrades issues.

Mountain Home Road is expected to be completed by mid October.
