An Invitation to Write

"The dog days of summer were historically the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius, which Greek and Roman astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck." From Wikipedia

Now THERE's a writing prompt...GO!

Our 2019 Summer Camps
had a Wide Reach

The 2019 Summer Camps for grades 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 were attended by 74 students from 48 school districts across Cincinnati and four different states, including California.  Each weeklong camp featured guest artists and culminated in a public readaround, where writers shared pieces created during camp.

For the first time this year, a unique summer session was held specifically for Young Adults, many of whom grew up attending Summer Camp and asked for programming designed especially for them.  We are grateful to our intergenerational summer teams of facilitators, including:  Janie Baer, Ally Bonhaus, Lisa Heckaman, Jaye Elizabeth Johnson, Bess Lindeman, Liv Linn, Rylie McDonald, Maura O'Dea, Lisa Prantl, Lisa Rocklin, and Keegan Sullivan.

Mourning the Creation
of Racial Categories
Part Two: Let Our Loss Be Heard

September 7, 1:00 - 4:30 pm

In the eighth session of this series, we partner with Northern Kentucky University as we explore, once again, race from the lens of categories. Dr. Joan Ferrante, a sociology professor at Northern Kentucky University, and her students created two films that examine the history of racial categories. This second film is inspired by the lives of Margaret and Robert Garner, an enslaved couple who ran toward freedom in Ohio with their four children. The children appear to be of different races, which profoundly affects each of their lives.

After viewing the film, we will write together, and discuss how racial categorization has impacted individuals and society. Facilitated by Diane Debevec with Guest Artist Dr. Joan Ferrante. Please note: This program takes place at WWf(a)C.

From Page to Stage--Women Writers Rock the Laughs

On Tuesday evening, July 30th, twelve women writers braved the stage at Go Bananas Comedy Club to offer an evening of hilarity and fun, all in support of Women Writing for (a)  Change. Making the leap from humorous writing to stand-up comedy, 5-minute plays and songs, these fearless women brought in $2,092 to support the work of Women Writing for (a) Change!

Thanks and gratitude to Teri Foltz for organizing and producing this evening for the eighth year in a row! And another round of applause to emcee Suz Fleming; comics Janie Baer, Brittany Freudiger, Meg Raut Howes, Drue Johnston, MC Rietz, Ned Sneed and Christine Wilson; singer/songwriter Roberta Schultz; playwrights Diane Germaine and Teri Foltz; and actor/stage hand  Claudia Kasvin. Thanks to each of you for putting the "fun" in fundraiser!
As the Tides, As the Moon:
Finding Our Vibrancy in the Still Points

September 15-18

Fall Retreat 2019

Join other writers at peaceful Transfiguration Spirituality Center in Glendale, Ohio and explore ways to settle into your own stillness as the tides, as the moon do.

Through a blended schedule of structured and free time - alone and in community - we will explore ways to reconnect to the intuitive wisdom and gentle companionship of nature.

Mornings will allow for free individual writing, afternoons for small groups, and evenings for large group activities and readings. Our retreat offers ample time for writing, walking, art-making, dreaming, and resting. This is an opportunity to go deeply into your writing, to start a new writing project, or to invite writing as a way to rediscover the vibrancy that already lives within you.
Facilitated by Janie Baer and Lisa Rocklin.
