An update from the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra's Aaron Collins:

"I want people to know that (my stroke) won’t define me and I’m working very hard to get back to normal. I’m feeling good. My memory is still a work in progress. I’m slowly getting back to work and regular life. Thankful I have such a strong group of loving (and patient) people around me."

Fans and friends can send Aaron good wishes and a hug or two on the SCSO Facebook page.
The Nag You Knew Was Coming Down the Track

Don't groan, but it's one of those times of year when I remind (nag) everyone not to wait to buy tickets to anything you even think you might possibly, maybe, want to see this season. Schedules are rolling in almost daily and notices about almost-sold out performances are coming in, too.

I had planned to write about Steve Rosen, co-writer of the season-opening show at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in next week’s Arts Blast, but an email update tells me we’ll be lucky if we find an empty seat to squeeze into for all three of the first shows of the season. Several days before you’re reading this, Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors was 80 percent sold out, The Mystery of Edwin Drood 70 percent, and Chicago 85 percent. That’s great news for the theater, particularly when the production of Dracula, written by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen is its first appearance anywhere. Ever.

On the other hand, it’s lousy news for procrastinators. I just went to the website to see what Almost Sold Out looks like. Seriously, if you hope to see it, stop reading and go online and buy your ticket. Then come back and finish your weekly dose of Arts Blast.

Okay, end of nag.

For Helen Miller
Steve Rosen & Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors
Why did I want to introduce readers to Steve Rosen, co-writer of Dracula: a Comedy of Terrors, coming soon to the Maltz Jupiter Theatre? Well, maybe just a little because he's married to an old friend but mostly because he's a seriously funny guy with a long career in just about every possible category in theater. He sings. He acts. He writes and composes. He probably dances, too. And he comes by it legitimately.

“I come from a very, very funny family. My father, mother and two brothers are all brilliant storytellers and I can’t count the number of times growing up that I fell out of my chair at the dinner table from laughing so hard,” Rosen said.

It was the acting thing, though, that really grabbed his attention as a kid, he said. “My parents sent me to a performing arts summer camp where I got to try a little of everything…and it’s where I made many of my closest friends.” It’s also where, at age seven, he played a servant in The King and I. “All I had to do was come out on stage, get on my knees and bow. Then at the end of the scene, I had to stand up and walk off the stage.”
And that’s went things went awry. With zero experience in wearing skirts, Rosen didn’t realize that standing on the skirt would have an unexpected result but quite a memory builder for the audience. “So there I stood, frozen, center stage, wearing nothing but my tighty-whiteys and a smile. The audience started to laugh at me…and instead of running off stage in horror, never to return, I started doing a little underpants dance and the audience roared. It was, as my parents like to say, the birth of a kosher ham.”

The press release for this new show reads: “Combining the epic horror story of Count Dracula with a dash of Mel Brooks and Monty Python, DRACULA: A Comedy of Terrors makes for a lightning fast, laugh-out-loud comedy.” Rosen has great history with those two. “Not only did I grow up as a fan, I have also had the amazing opportunity to work closely with both Mel Brooks and Monty Python as an adult.”

His first real job in show business was for legendary casting director Tara Rubin. When casting The Producers, Rubin gave Rosen a job as audition reader. “That means when actors came in to audition, I was hired to perform the scenes with them. I would spend weeks at a time reading those classic scenes with incredible actors, and then get the opportunity to discuss them in close quarters with Mel Brooks, who for the record is as funny and kind in person as you would hope.”
Then he got the same job on Monty Python’s Spamalot. “That gig went so well, Mike Nichols actually hired me to play the role of Sir Bedevere in the original Broadway production of the show. Getting to build that show as an actor from the very beginning with Eric Idle, Mike Nichols, Hank Azaria, David Hyde Pierce and Tim Curry was more than a master class in comedy writing and performance, it was a Harvard education.”

After arranging to do this story, I went to Google for some history about Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors. Nothing there other than the production at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre opening October 27 and running through November 10. There’s a good reason for that, says Rosen, co-writer of the comedy with Gordon Greenberg. Rosen said, “Audiences here will be the first ever to see  Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors. The production opening at the Maltz-Jupiter is the world premiere!”

He said the writing duo had to change the storyline significantly from Bram Stoker’s novel for many reasons, “but primarily because Gordon and I both have ADHD and couldn’t make it through the whole novel. Our version finds Dracula finally ready to settle down and find ‘the one.’ Whether or not he does and they ride off into the sunset (or maybe the sunrise?) together, you’ll have to come see to find out.”
The actors in the show are some of the finest in the country, Rosen said, and three of them live in South Florida. “These delightful and hilarious geniuses are Paul Carlin, Mallory Newbrough, Wayne LeGette, (all currently residing here) and Peter Simon Hilton and Jared Zirilli who are in from New York City. They are astoundingly talented and their collaborative spirit have made this process joyous. Between the accents and the gender-swapping and quick costume changes…I’m pretty sure there is nothing they cannot do.”

I did not know this: Because of union rules, writers aren’t allowed to make any changes to the production once it opens, so Rosen and Greenberg leave town early the morning after opening night, heading for the west coast to get started on a new version of their Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG (your town’s name here) Christmas show. Their take on Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol is a high comedy version of the story … where five actors jump from character to character. “This year will see its third consecutive production at the legendary Bucks County Playhouse near Philadelphia, as well as its West Coast premiere at the Old Globe Theatre in beautiful San Diego.”
I can't end a feature on Steve Rosen without mentioning the show he wrote with David Rossmer, The Other Josh Cohe. It was nominated for six Drama Desk awards: Best New Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Lyrics, Best Music, Best Leading Actor (Rosen) and Best Supporting Actress (Kate Wetherhead). Rosen said one reviewer tagged it as Seinfeld meets Rodgers and Hart.

The success was a long haul, however. Writing, casting, and the other details of getting a show to the stage are not the only hurdles to jump over. “Because there are only so few great smaller theaters in New York City, waiting for the right one to become available took some time. We had originally intended to run it for six weeks, but we became such a hit we extended twice and wound up running for six months,” Rosen said. “Quite a coup for a show with no celebrities or giant King Kong puppets.”

He gave a short version of the story: “In the show Josh Cohen comes home to find his apartment has been robbed of absolutely everything except a Neil Diamond CD. As he picks up the pieces of his life, all he has to listen to is this one album and so David and I composed a score in the style of a long lost Neil Diamond album.” And that led to the next big thing, “a star-studded studio recording called The Other Josh Cohen: A Musical With Songs . It features a mind-boggling array of celebrity vocal talent including: Chita Rivera, Sutton Foster, Kelli O’Hara, Hank Azaria, Jimmi Simpson, James Roday, Brian D’Arcy James…the list goes on and on.”
Don’t be surprised if we see Rosen and Greenberg in Jupiter again. Rosen said, “Not only is the theatre a state-of-the-art facility with lots of parking and bathrooms, the community of people who work here are the exact kinds of people you need when you’re birthing a baby show. Every single person working at the Maltz-Jupiter is totally committed to rolling up their sleeves and rolling with the punches with good humor and a positive attitude….

“I know I speak for Gordon when I say that we are so grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented artists to bring Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors to life for the first time ever at the Maltz-Jupiter Theater. And on behalf of everyone working on the show, we are really looking forward to making audiences here forget about their troubles and laugh for 90 minutes. We anticipate you’ll have a bloody good time.”

Vero Beach Centennial Finale
The day we've been waiting for is just about here. If you're one of the few Vero Beach residents not in the Centennial parade, you might want to pack up your folding chair and plant yourself in the best parade-viewing spot you can find. You know. The way people do when a new iPhone is coming out.

It's been on our radar for the past year but a year's worth of events takes a lot of hard work and planning by a lot of people.
F rom Centennial Committee co-chair Tammy Bursick:

I have enjoyed co-chairing the Centennial Event with Vice Mayor Tony Young. We started planning for the event two years ago and we never imagined how it would grow to be such a success. We have over 105 applications from people that will appear in the Grand Finale Parade.

It has meant so much to me to see how our community has embraced the Centennial and wanted to be a part of it.
Co-chair Tony Young has had a special interest in the celebration. His family is one of the pioneer families of Vero Beach. He said, "My grandmother purchase a deed in 1913. So they may have arrived around 1912. My grandfather worked for Indian River Farms."

He added, "The Vero Centennial is our bridge to the next century. By our commitment to the ideals that have made us flourish we will prosper in the years ahead. We are all vested in this beautiful village by the lagoon and sea!! 😀🇺🇸"

Have a Not-Too-Scary Halloween -
Invitations From Main Street Fort Pierce and Manatee Center
From Main Street Fort Pierce:

On October 23rd and 24th historical figures from Fort Pierce’s past will tell their stories all throughout the downtown area. This annual living history tour is a fun way to learn about the people that settled in this area before the conveniences of air conditioning, mosquito control, and modern transportation.

Since there are so many interesting stories to tell, there are FOUR different Ghosts of Fort Pierce Past walking tours. Each tour is approximately 1 hour in length, has between 8-10 stops, and waiting at each stop is an actor portraying a person that has lived here in the past. The Law Firm of Hoskins, Turco, Lloyd & Lloyd has sponsored the event for many years and is committed to helping support the retelling and preservation of Fort Pierce’s history. Fee Yates & Fee joins again this year as well. New benefactor Dyer Chevrolet Fort Pierce has joined in sponsoring the Ghost Walk's 15th year.
The Ghost of Fort Pierce Past tours are a fundraiser for Main Street Fort Pierce. Each tour is $10 per person age 16 & up, $5 ages 5-15, and no charge for children under 5. This is a very popular event that sells out each year so reservations are required. Participants should arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled tour and wear comfortable walking shoes. The first tours leave at 5:30 p.m. with additional tours leaving every 15 minutes until 7:30 p.m. ~Rain or shine, the show will go on.~

Please note that routes and characters are subject to change:

In case you happen to be reading Arts Blast somewhere near Miami, you might be interested in this bit from the Miami Herald.:

“For more than 60 years, Mira Lehr of Miami Beach has been creating important work and championing women artists.
The eco-feminist’s new show features her latest paintings and 180 aerial sculptures at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. Lehr, 85, will also make a special appearance at the opening reception Oct. 15.
This show emphasizes her dedication to nature and protecting the planet. It also honors Lehr’s memories of the museum, originally a synagogue.”

There’s a lot of interesting information and plenty of pictures of Mira’s work on her website . For example: Mira Lehr is an eco-feminist artist from Miami whose career spans four decades. Her nature-based imagery encompasses painting, design, sculpture and video installations. Lehr’s processes include non-traditional media such as resin, gunpowder, fire, Japanese paper, dyes and welded steel.

Student performers from Miami-Dade schools participated in a Bahamas Benefit Concert at the Miami Arts Studio 6-12 at Zelda Glazer . Through the Foundation for New Education Initiative, the concert raised more than $70,000 for Operation Helping Hands to help support hurricane relief efforts in the Bahamas.
