Superintendent's Falcon Focus
Greetings to FHUSD Parents, Guardians and Friends,

The Golden Eagle Education Foundation (GEEF) Mentor Program

The GEEF is a non-profit partnership of parents, students, business members and other supportive residents with a commitment to support the education of students from Fountain HIlls, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and the Verde River communities.  Established in 1992, the foundation has evolved from its original mission to provide scholarships for FHHS Seniors to a mult-dimensional organization with four core programs. In addition to the Student College Scholarships, the foundation also supports Teacher-Staff Appreciation Awards, Funds for Classroom Projects, and Student Mentoring.

The Mentoring Program is a community based initiative providing trusting relationships between trained adult mentors and FHUSD students in all grades. Jeannie Ryan has been the program coordinator for the past 16 years and has now passed the torch to Isa Crespo. Since the program's inception in 1996, there have been approximately 1,800 mentors and over 2,000 students being mentored.

Mentoring can play a critical role in the social and emotional development of children.  The establishment of a trusting relationship with another caring adult who can provide friendship, counseling and encouragement can lead to greater self-confidence, character growth and improved leadership skills for the student or mentee. The mentor-mentee relationship also typically grows into a mutually beneficial connection where the mentor feels they are making a difference in a child's life.  In a fast paced, technology driven world where social media serves as a significant tool for interaction, the one-to-one personal time between mentor and mentee allows for a deeper human connection. At a recent mentor breakfast recognizing program participants, many mentors spoke of the multi-year relationships they had established with their students. Some indicated the students continued to correspond with their mentor even after the student had moved on to college.

The GEEF Mentor Program currently has 78 mentors working with 122 students and the school principals say there are many more students who would benefit from this wonderful program.  If you can contribute one or two hours a week that can help change the life of a child, please consider the GEEF Mentor Program as they are continually looking for new mentors. Please visit the GEEF website to learn more about participating ( www.fhgeef.org ).

FHUSD Achieves and Celebrates Educational Excellence through continued attention to both academic achievement and personal growth and the GEEF Mentoring Program is an essential element in this mission.

Regards,
Robert Allen, Ed.D.
