Labor Force at Record High
The Labor Department reported earlier this month that an influx of 370,000 new workers to the labor force brought the participation rate up to 63%, its highest since March. The total labor force of 163.4 million set a record high. Overall, employment remains strong despite growing fears that the U.S economy could enter a recession in 2020.

Despite concerns of a slowdown in  manufacturing, jobs
in the sector increased by 16,000, however, hours worked fell three-tenths to 40.4, the lowest level since July 2011.

Try Sputnikfest in Manitowoc, also on September 7th. Feel like pigging out? Celebrate all things bacon at "Bacon Bash" in River Falls on September 14th and 15th.

Looking for something even more unique? You can still "catch" the Wisconsin Cow Chip Throw and Festival in Prairie Du Sac on August 30th.

Check Fraud Alert!

Within the past 3 months, Flex-Staff has experienced two cases of check fraud, and one case of check theft, something we had not previously seen in our 46 years in business.

In the cases of check fraud, the perpetrator used a home computer and printer to create fake checks with Flex-Staff's name, logo, and address on them, but with another
company's bank account number and bank routing number.  That company's bank caught the fraudulent checks, and the company alerted us.
We recommend that companies be proactive and contact their financial institution to find out what systems they have in place or available to prevent or reduce check fraud.  It's also important to find out what your company's liability is if a fraudulent check is drawn on your account.

The case of check theft came to our attention when we contacted a client company about a late invoice.  The company stated that they had sent a check for the invoice several weeks ago, and we discovered that the check they sent had actually cleared our account.

To prevent check theft, Flex-Staff has a secured, locking mail box to receive our incoming mail.  Still, checks pass through several hands on the way to their final destination.  For a more secure invoice payment option, Flex-Staff accepts payment via ACH.  To learn more, or to get set up to pay your invoices via ACH, contact Mike Hackbarth at Flex-Staff's Appleton headquarters (920-731-8082).

We encourage everyone to be vigilant in their accounting practices to help reduce the risk of check fraud and theft.
One Minute Ideas
10 Surefire Ways to Get People to Like You

Get them to do a favor for you Feeling useful and needed makes people feel great... which makes them like you.
Ask them for advice - Genuinely ask people for advice to show them that you respect and admire their expertise and wisdom. They'll enjoy advising you - feeling important, competent, and helpful.
Don't try to be perfect, show your flaws instead - This will make you look more human, and people will be able to relate to you.
Gossip - the right way - Talk positively about others and people will unconsciously transfer that positivity and likability to you.
Remember people's names and use them often - Show someone you care about them by remembering and using their name during conversations.  It's like paying them a subtle compliment.
Give people the opportunity to talk about themselves - Be a good listener and encourage others to talk about themselves.
Focus on what you have in common - Always try to emphasize similarities and find common grounds with people.  This will help you bond.
Mirror people - Mirror another person's gestures, postures, tone of voice, breathing, and facial expressions to connect with that person.
Get personal - Drop the small talk and get personal. Talking about personal subjects helps you connect with others.  (Hint: Tell them a secret of yours - they'll feel like an insider, which always feels great.)
Smile - Smile more often.  Especially, smile at other people more often. This will make them think you like them, and in turn, they'll like you as well.

Back to School...

Although it still looks a lot like summer, within the next week or two all of those college students that helped so many companies through the labor shortage over the summer will be heading back to school. Even over the summer break good employees were still in short supply, so this fall companies can anticipate an even tighter labor supply, and stiffer competition for employees.

Make Flex-Staff part of your staffing strategy, and increase the odds of having the help you need, when you need it.
Recipe
Elote (Mexican Street Corn)

Elote is a common street food in Mexico, hence the nickname.  If you're having trouble finding cotija cheese, you could always try feta cheese (which has a similar texture and saltiness, though it tends to have a sharper, tangier taste), or finely grated parmesan cheese.

Ingredients
6 medium-size ears of yellow corn on the cob
1 tablespoon olive or vegetable oil, or melted butter
¼ cup mayonnaise
¼ cup sour cream
1 teaspoon chile powder
¼ teaspoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon lime juice (plus wedges of a lime for serving)
½ cup crumbled cotija cheese
¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped

Instructions
Remove the husks from the corn. Lightly brush the corn on the cob with oil or melted butter, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill corn at 400 degrees for approximately 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until brown or charred in spots. While corn is cooking, mix together mayonnaise, sour cream, chile powder, cumin, and lime juice in a bowl. Brush each grilled cob with the mayo mixture and sprinkle with cotija cheese. Garnish with cilantro and serve. For added spice, sprinkle with extra chile powder, and a dash of ground red pepper.
