We met on June 19th at the home of Charmaine Mesina. Thanks again, Charmaine, for hosting us so graciously. We discussed "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. This autobiography, written in a journalistic style, provoked varied responses. Many of us admired Hirsi Ali's courage, resilience, and ability to transcend a traumatizing childhood in a dysfunctional family, but we also felt she seemed to lack empathy and the deeper understanding that comes with adulthood. Her experiences in Holland led us to consider the difficult issue of how democratic societies should deal with immigrant minorities. We recognized her controversial status (she has been labeled an Islamophobe, and the book criticized for inaccuracies about Islam) due to her critique of Islam, which we felt reflected the narrowness of her own experiences.  This book generated a heated debate, which illustrates why we have avoided political books in the past. If we had realized how sensitive and controversial the book is, we would not  have chosen it for the book club.

The upcoming schedule looks like this:

August 21: Movie Night, a potluck dinner starting at 5:30 pm, followed by the film "Fried  Green Tomatoes," based on the novel "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café"  by Fannie Flagg. The book is available at Kepler's; remember to ask for the book club  discount.

September 18: "The Sixth Extinction" by Elizabeth Kolbert

October 16: "The Overstory" by Richard Powers

If you're interested in joining the book club, please contact  Sally Smith '64 for more information.

Stay tuned for more Smithie events and news next month. If anyone is interested in volunteering with the club, please feel free to reach out to [email protected]! Thanks!
