PARISH NEWS

Christian Education has begun!

All classes meet on the Lower Level at 9:15am

Rector's Forum: Celtic Spirituality. People looking for their soul's true home would do well to learn from the Celts. They knew their soul home came from their easy intersection between the Ordinary and the Divine. Learn about Celtic Christianity in this three part series and what they still have to teach us about prayer and life in a way too busy world.

Presenter: Dr. Cynthia Taylor. She has studied and taught Celtic Spirituality for over 30 years, including at Augusta University's Continuing Education Department and led pilgrimages.

Parents and Young Adults Forum: Present over Perfect.  Author Shauna Niequist walks a path away from frantic pushing and proving, and toward the person you were created to be.

Coordinators:
Mallory Halterman ([email protected]) and
Cheryl Spessert ([email protected])

BLAST
(Bible Learning Action Stations)

Calling all kids from kindergarten through 5th Grade! We have some really EXCITING lessons planned for this coming school year! We are going back to our Rotation Station model incorporating science, cooking, games, art, drama and technology workshops into the Bible stories and lessons each week to help us gain a deeper understanding of the Bible and how it relates to our daily lives.

Our lessons this year will include the Creation story, Noah's Ark, Psalm 23, The Lord's Prayer, the House on the Rock, the Good Samaritan, And Doubting Thomas, along with lessons about Advent, Christmas, and Holy Week. We meet each week on the lower level each Sunday from 9:15-10:15 am.

We are looking for volunteers to help us lead the BLAST lessons. Prayerfully consider helping us in this ministry. Lesson plans and supplies are provided. You don't have to commit to every Sunday and there is no experience necessary! Contact Ayn Colsh at [email protected] .

We're Starting Up a Children's Choir!

Calling all 1st through 5th graders! Holy Comforter is starting a Children's Choir! Beginning September 8, we will rehearse on Sunday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 in the sanctuary. The children's choir will be directed by Drs. Brad and Lucy Green. Both Brad and Lucy are certified music teachers who have extensive experience working with church, school, and community children's choirs. They are excited to kick off a program here at Holy Comforter. To gauge interest in this new program, we will only meet regularly this fall. Our goal is to perform during the Advent/Christmas season. See you there!

Sharing God's Word: Our Guest Preachers

This Christmas Eve marks the 20th Birthday of the launching of Holy Comforter. We are starting the celebrations early with a host of guest preachers, from within and without of our congregation, that begins in 2019 and continues through 2020.

Sunday September 1 The Rev. Canon Frank Logue. Frank is the Canon to the Ordinary, which basically means he is our bishop's right hand man.   He is also one of the most gifted preachers in the Episcopal Church. You are in for a treat. You can follow his blog at  loosecanon.georgiaepiscopal.org/

Sunday September 22 The Rev. Dr. Reggie McNeal. Reggie is a Baptist preacher, teacher, writer and iconoclast, who pushes us not to settle for what passes as everyday Christianity. He is also funny as all get out. Reggie has preached before at Holy Comforter and was instrumental in starting some of our outreach ministries. For more info on Reggie go to www.reggiemcneal.org .

Sunday October 6 The Rev. Dr. Nadim Nassar.   Syrian born Nadim is a  priest in the Church of England.  More importantly he is the founder of The Awareness Project. His book, The Culture of God, gives voice to our questioning: "Where is...God in a world that seems bent on self-destruction?'  As a peace-builder in Syria, the UK, the US and beyond, Fr. Nadim leads us into a transformative, reconciling, life-changing power that leads to abundant life and 'to protect the sanctity of life, which is defiled by war.'" The Rev. Nassar is traveling in our country this fall promoting peace and reconciliation, particularly in Iraq and Syria. Go to  www.awareness-foundation.com .

Acolyte Festival to be Held in Augusta

Saturday, August 25-Sunday, August 26: The Diocesan Acolyte Festival will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, GA .   This is for acolytes of all ages.   Contact Acolyte Master Morgan Hooper at [email protected].

PILGRIMAGE 2020

Civil Rights in America
Dialog Series 2020
with The Rev. Brian Tillman &
The Rev. Dr. Gary Mason

A Pilgrimage  Opportunity

A picture might be worth a thousand words but seeing and interacting with places and people is worth much more. Civil Rights in America is a unique travel opportunity to help travelers recognize the depths of racism in America so that reconciliation and healing can begin. Museums, churches, sites of historic marches, and sites of tragic violence and killing are part of this thought-provoking travel experience. In addition to visiting historic sites in the South, experts in reconciliation and conflict resolution will lecture and guide dialog between travelers to help them return home with new ways to implement reconciliation and healing. The pilgrimage begins and ends in Atlanta, starting March 17.

The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Taylor is the chief Episcopal pilgrimage host. Of greater importance are our pilgrim guides, The Rev. Brian Tillman of Atlanta, who works to brings justice and reconciliation to churches, and The Rev. Dr. Gary Mason of Ireland, who works on reconciliation and peace. He was recognized by Queen Elizabeth for his work in Northern Ireland.

The tour is organized by Education Opportunities. More details coming soon.
