Grantee Spotlight: Eastern Idaho Public Health
Eastern Idaho Public Health (EIPH) is a recipient of ODP's Partnerships for Success (PFS) Grant.

Each recipient is required to implement the Be The Parents underage drinking prevention campaign in their local area. That could mean distributing print materials, putting up billboards, or using social and digital media.

PFS Project Coordinator at EIPH, Marco Erickson, got creative and partnered with the local minor league baseball team, the Idaho Falls Chukars, to implement a Be The Parents night at the baseball stadium.

They placed stickers on cups reminding adults about the consequences of providing alcohol to minors, inserted a 30-Day parenting challenge of fun and simple activities for families in the program, and placed banners in the stadium.

Youth from Community Youth in Action placed over 10,000 stickers on the cups and are still placing more as additional inventory of cups are delivered. Marco also has future plans for the youth to perform a drug and alcohol prevention skit on the alcohol free night EIPH is sponsoring on August 27, 2019!

This is a great example of community-based prevention in action!

New Learning Management System for Prevention Professionals
Thanks to funding from the Partnerships for Success Grant, ODP is pleased to announce our new learning management system (LMS) for prevention professionals is LIVE.

The LMS currently hosts two online course to support fulfillment of PFS and SABG grantee Provisional Prevention Specialist (PPS) requirements. The system is also available to non-grantees working in substance use prevention and those interested in learning more about the field.

Additional online courses to support Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) requirements and other grantee training needs will be added over the next year. Additionally, the LMS will provide access to register for in-person classes in the near future.

Currently available self-paced courses:
  • Substance Abuse Prevention Ethics (4 hours)
  • Fundamentals of Prevention (5 hours)

To register, go to  https://odplms.tovuti.io/   and select the "Register" button in the upper right corner. If your organization is a current recipient of the PFS or SABG funds, use the grantee registration option. All others will use the general registration option.

Prescription Opioid Misuse Media Campaign Underway
ODP has expanded the Speak Out/Opt Out/Throw Out prescription opioid misuse prevention campaign. Additional mass media campaign assets adapted from Utah's original campaign are being implemented in Idaho from July 1 - December 31, 2019.

You may have seen or heard the TV and radio spots that have been running for the past 1.5 months. This messaging, directed at the general public, reminds individuals that while we all may experience injuries, not every injury needs an opioid and there are often better more effective alternatives.

Billboards around the state, like the image below, went up at the beginning of August and transit bus wraps in the Treasure Valley will be in place in the next few days. Be on the look out!

Additionally, ODP is working with Boise State, University of Idaho, and Idaho State to promote the messaging via web ads on their Athletics web sites and through their Facebook accounts with a fun GIF featuring the team mascots! The web ads will run for several months and the GIF will run close to the beginning of the Fall sports season.

Project ECHO Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Waiver Training
Prescribing medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help people reduce or quit their use of heroin or other opioids, such as pain relievers, is carefully regulated. Qualified physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants are required to acquire a MAT DATA waiver and maintain certifications to legally dispense or prescribe opioid dependency medications. This training may cost providers $200.

Project ECHO Idaho is offering FREE online MAT Waiver Training for physicians, nurse practitioners, and physicians assistants on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 from 12:30 - 5 p.m. M.T. Training will be led by Dr. Magni Hamso and Dr. Todd Palmer of Boise. The training is two-part
  • Live 4-hour seminar using video conferencing
  • online self-paced modules

Attendees join with Zoom conferencing from anywhere in the state, but must be able to join using a webcam.

Physicians who complete the training qualify for the waiver to prescribe and dispense buprenorphine. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants will also qualify for the waiver after an additional 16 hours of training.
