Q&A WITH RAY
Lithium-Battery Fire Containment
"Q & A with Ray"
Raymond Goyco, Jr. is CEO at Baker Aviation Services Group and co-founded HOT-STOP 'L' Fire Containment more than 13-years ago. His knowledge of lithium-ion battery containment in today's powerful portable devices is exceptional and his passion for safety goes above and beyond. This new Q&A With Ray column will appear regularly to answer your questions about this real threat on aircraft and how to contain it! Send your questions to info@hot-stopl.com
Why is there such a range in pricing for fire containment products?
Not all containment products available today are created equal. Most products have not been through extensive testing in an FAA-registered laboratory, or consistently renew their burn certifications because their products may not be constructed to successfully pass these tests, and it is costly. At HOT-STOP ‘L’, we build up to a standard not down to a price point. We invest in our products by exceeding expectations with a tested and proven FIREPROOF status (as defined by 14 CFR 1.1) because your safety is our number one concern.
Why does HOT-STOP come in several sizes?
Our Kits come in multiple sizes because our expertise and extensive testing allow us to efficiently match the right size fire containment vessel for your operation. Whether the lithium-ion battery powered device is on board an aircraft at 38,000 feet, in a helicopter, underwater craft, on a medical cart, or in a spacecraft, HOT-STOP ‘L’ has engineered a solution for 100% containment.

DID YOU KNOW?
Li-Ion Battery IQ - What is mAh?
You may have seen electronic device descriptions, especially for power banks, that include a milliamp hour or mAh, and wondered what does this mean? As indicated in the chart below, the mAh determines the battery power and helps determine watt hours too, an important measure for airline carry-on limitations. As a universal unit of measure, mAh is also referenced in some lithium-battery fire containment testing.

At HOT-STOP 'L', we always want to help you choose the right fire containment bag size for the types of devices you are bringing on board the plane. In some cases, we custom design and test containment kits to accommodate higher mAh or watt hour ranges. See the typical mAh range below for common personal devices and contact us with any questions.

Watt hours = (mAh x Voltage) / 1000
mAh = (Watt Hours x 1000) / Voltage

Standard nominal voltage for li-ion batteries is 3.7V but can be 6.5V or more
