Student interns get hands-on, real-world career experience over summer
For the second year, over 75 high school students from Vista del Lago, Folsom High and Cordova High had an opportunity to learn and explore careers with local business partners over the summer.

The CTESPP (Career Technical Education Summer Preceptorship Program) helps place students with internship opportunities from Monday - Thursday. Fridays are reserved for on-campus, in-class learning, where they learn "soft skills" such as interviewing strategies, expectations in the workplace and resume writing.

None of this would have been possible without the CTE teachers who helped facilitate this experience over the summer and the extraordinary community partners who hosted one or more of our students this summer, listed below. Thank you for enhancing our students' experiences:

VIDEO: Parents, students learn together in Summer Academy
Folsom Cordova's annual Family Engagement Summer Academy took place at White Rock Elementary School earlier this year. What years ago started as a summer meal program for kids turned into a full summer learning camp where kids can stay active and continue learning in the summer.

There were 65 students in the academy, ranging from grades 1-6. After sixth grade, many come back the next year as volunteers called 'CIT's' (or Counselors in Training) which help in the classrooms and interact with the children.

This year's theme was 'Makers Space,' which included coding, robotics and technology. Kids in the academy rotated between classrooms featuring different hands-on, DIY activities such as making their own games, as well classes in art and yoga. The children loved showing off their work to their caring adults, teachers and the CIT's.

Caring adults include parents, grandparents, or anyone that's a guardian to the child. On Mondays and Wednesdays, adults had the opportunity to hear from guest speakers who offered insight about creating better and more effective communication with their children. All of these sessions are translated, in real time, into Spanish for non English-speakers.

"The Summer Academy meets a need in this community," said Linda Burkholder, who recently retired as the District's director of family engagement and support services. "We're keeping kids safe. We're giving them lunch, the school district gives them breakfast and lunch everyday [of the academy], and we give them engaging STEM activities. The parents and other caring adults are learning together as adults and then their sharing those skills and information to benefit their families; and they're also reinforcing the importance of learning with their children."

FCUSD staff and students presented with awards and honors over summer
Over the summer many FCUSD staff were recognized for their significant leadership and contributions to student success. We couldn't be more proud. If you see them in the hallway, classroom or on campus, tell them congratulations!

Alicia Caddell , our Career and Technical Education Coordinator, was honored as an outstanding administrator of the year, and given the Family and Consumer Sciences Secondary Administration Award for her excellent leadership of CTE programs, which provide skill-based learning pathways to prepare students for college and career. See these opportunities on our CTE website ! We are thrilled Alicia was recognized for this well-deserved award. Her leadership has made an impact and FCUSD CTE represented strongly this summer, with several accolades given to staff and students.

VIDEO: Dr. Koligian welcomes back #TeamFCUSD in virtual "huddle"
Each year, Superintendent Sarah Koligian welcomes back nearly 2,200 Folsom Cordova teachers, support staff, and administrators to the new school year by gathering Team FCUSD for a rally-style, back-to-school "huddle". In her remarks, employee accomplishments are celebrated, and focus areas for the year are highlighted.

This year's theme, "Climate 2.0," built upon our school communities' continued work around strengthening positive relationships with students, with each other as employees, and through the self-care necessary to be best equipped to support student success.

New in 2019: To make it easier for all employees to participate in this year's huddle, Dr. Koligian broadcast her remarks live to all school sites, where employees gathered in one location to watch, and reflect in activities afterward.

Watch the video: Click here to see a rebroadcast of Dr. Koligian's welcome back message to employees.
