Give Voice to All

Don't let the surrounding noise drown out quiet voices. When students have voice in their 21st CCLC program, they're known to be more successful and happier. When new and experienced program leaders reflect and question, they can better see and hear the big picture. And when your students and families have help building their financial literacy, they can develop a confident voice in their own community budget decisions.
Don't Miss This!

Creative Program Ideas
  • September 1: Emma M. Nutt Day celebrates America's first woman telephone operator in 1878. Ask students to imagine what Emma might say about today's cell phone world! (Emma said she was "very thankful" her first name wasn't Imma.)
  • September 3: In 1838,  Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery by boarding a train in Baltimore dressed as a sailor. Learn how he became an important voice for the voiceless.
  • September 23:  International Day of Sign Languages. Learn about American Sign Language (ASL) and try some of the  100 first words. ASL can be an engaging way to reinforce vocabulary. If students have interest, consider partnering with a local organization for the deaf.
  • September 16-20: National Pollution Prevention Week. Have students consider how they can "speak" for the environment and reduce personal trash and pollution. These tips may help start the discussion.

Guide From Experience
When new grants have been awarded and new grantees prepare for their first year of operation, you hear many questions like these:
  • I didn't write the grant. How do I determine what I'm expected to do?
  • I'm with a community-based (or faith-based) organization. How do I ensure I work with the local school district as expected?
  • Where can I go for guidance on capturing reporting data and using the reporting system?
  • Where can I find information on best practices and evidence-based practices?
  • I don't have any registration forms, budget forms or job descriptions. Can you provide those or tell me where to get them?
While your state has a set of resources, you can also refer grantees to Y4Y resources. Suggest the Introduction to 21st CCLC and Managing Your 21st CCLC Program courses. Also be sure to encourage new grantees to sign up for the New Leaders Virtual Academy referenced above.
