OVERCOME

“Jesus asked, ‘Do you finally believe? But the time is coming – indeed it’s here now – when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.’”
John 16:31-33

We are in a most interesting time in the world right now. These Scripture verses speak clearly. We have been scattered by the pandemic, violence and political divisions. Yet, each of us was never alone because God, was, is and will always be with us. Additionally, Jesus tells us that it is His desire for us to have peace through Him regardless of what goes on in the world. He does not stop there. He does not leave us wondering if our trials and sorrows will ever end. He tells us to, “take heart, because I have overcome the world.” Our trials and sorrows will not last. Political divisions may seem like they will last forever. Jesus overcame those because they are of the world. Violence seems like it will last forever. Jesus overcame that because it is of the world. The pandemic seemed like it would last forever. We have hope of it ending because we see the numbers decreasing and people getting vaccinated. It is much easier to believe when we can see results with our own eyes.
“Do you finally believe?” Jesus died and overcame death. Jesus overcame the world. “Jesus looked at them intently and said, ‘Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.’” (Matthew 19:26)

As we approach Easter, and the light at the end of the dark tunnel known as Covid-19 (and everything else), let us take time to reflect on how each of us can experience our own personal resurrection with Jesus Christ. What have we, through the grace of God, overcome?

Precious Lord,
We praise you for always being with us no matter what our trials or sorrows may be. We thank you abundantly each time we overcome a difficulty. Help us to remember that every time that happens, it is a reflection of the great Resurrection of Jesus Christ. May we celebrate with all our hearts every time. Amen.
