AN INITIATIVE PETITION FOR A LAW RELATIVE TO THE SALE OF BEER AND WINE BY FOOD STORES IN MA
Cumberland Farms a now foreign owned chain business is pushing for a ballot question regarding beer and wine sales.
They are looking for voters to support “food stores” to have unlimited licenses to sell beer and wine.
Back in 2006 the supermarket association also tried this on a ballot question and voters turned it away. That decision lead to an agreement to expand licenses in the state form 3 to 9 in 2020. So starting next year a “corporation” can hold 9 licenses in the state.
NOW Cumberland Farms wants to go beyond the 9-license agreement to put in ALL food stores. The whole idea after prohibition was to CONTROL alcohol so it would not be everywhere and easy to get.
Also in this law “food stores” if caught selling to minors would ONLY have to stop selling wine and beer if have a violation and could stay open to sell other products. IF a liquor store violates that law they must TOTALLY shut down.
PLEASE think of independent family owned businesses and the impact this could have.
