A military culinary training center in Fort Lee, Va., chef and army sergeant Sarah Deckert was handed a basket of ingredients—buffalo tenderloin, red snapper, tiger prawns, and pheasant. She was given 30 minutes to plot a menu incorporating the items, and three and a half hours to craft a four-course meal.
Of the nation’s 1.8 million women veterans, only one woman has ever earned the Medal of Honor — Mary Edwards Walker, for her service during the Civil War.
While many men were off fighting the Nazis, fascist Italy and the Japanese, women on the home front were changing the fortunes of World War II by playing pivotal roles. More than 30 women from the Campbell County area served in all branches of the military stationed at home and abroad. Their roles ranged from being supply clerks and pharmacist mates to yeoman and flight nurses.
The Army Women’s Foundation honors the service and sacrifices of U.S. Army women through our Hall of Fame Induction and Special Recognition Awards program. Women who have served in the Army or the Armed Forces, and contributed extraordinary service are eligible for induction into the US Army Women’s Hall of Fame. Our Special Recognition Awards are presented to any individual who has made exceptional contributions to women in the Army or the Armed Forces. Most inductees are women who have served in the US Army, but the list of honorees also includes Brigadier General Wilma Vaught, USAF, Retired.
Our Hall of Fame Awards were first presented in 2009, and have been presented each year since then.

Nominations are open until July 31st, 2020:
