Squannacook Greenways wins $100,000 grant to build 1/3 of rail trail
Squannacook Greenways is excited to announce that we were awarded a $100,000 grant to help finish the first part of our rail trail, from Depot St to Old Meetinghouse Road in Townsend. With this money and some of our previously raised funds, we will be removing the rails and ties, and putting down a 10 foot wide stone dust surface in this 1.1 mile section.
With this grant we will be able to complete the rail trail from Depot St to Old Meetinghouse Road in Townsend, a distance of 1.1 miles.
The grant we won was from the MassTrails grant program, which awarded a total of 4 million dollars for projects throughout Massachusetts. MassTrails is an inter-agency collaboration between the state's Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, and MassDOT that aims to fill gaps in the state's growing network of off-street multi-use paths and trails by providing matching funds to local fundraising efforts.

Construction of this section will take place between November and March due to endangered species restrictions.  Squannacook Greenways is drawing up the construction specification now, and will be contacting interested contractors soon.

Our plan is to apply for this or other grants in the future, and complete 1/3 of the rail trail each year.  And remember, the full rail trail is open now as a walking trail.
