The Reverend Ken Jones to serve as Acting Head of Staff for the month of August.
At their recent meeting Session has engaged the Reverend Ken Jones, a retired Presbyterian pastor, as the part-time Acting Head of Staff for 20 hour per week for the month of August .The Reverend Ken Jones along with his wife the Reverend Suzanne Carter have preached and worshiped at Covenant..At this same meeting Session also set the August worship schedule. Reverend Jones will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of his
ordination this year. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, is a graduate of Lafayette College (PA) and San Francisco Theological Seminary (CA), served in five churches in greater Cleveland, worked for ten years on the staff of the Presbytery of the Western Reserve and honorably retired in 2006 after a three year term as mission coworker with spouse Susanne Carter in South Africa.

Rabbi Roger C. Klein to our pulpit this week. He has served congregations in Indiana and Columbus, Ohio and has taught at The University of Kentucky, Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and at The Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Jerusalem.Rabbi Klein grew up in Shaker Heights and graduated from Shaker Heights High School. He played varsity baseball in high school and in college and is a life-long, avid tennis player. He has three grown children and two grandchildren.

Music Notes
Our soloist Ashlyn Herd is a second year Master’s student studying with Dina Kuznetsova at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the San Francisco Conservatory. At CIM she has performed the roles of Cook in Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol and Phédre in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie. She has attended summer programs such as Oberlin Academy, AIMS, and the German Vocal Arts Academy. Ashlyn currently sings under a fellowship for the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus.Our closing hymn, “God of the Sparrow,” is member Nancy Smekal’s “all time favorite.” The poet, Jaroslav Vajda (1919-2008) was born in Loraine, Ohio, and sought to create a text that described how and why God’s creatures and God’s children should serve God.

The Ministry of Faith Formation would like to learn what you
like about a worship bulletin. Share your thoughts and ideas with us in a variety of ways:
1. If you visit a church during your summer travels, bring a bulletin back with you and share it with MoFF. Let us know what you
liked about the document.
2. If your out-of-town family worships at a church and they
like their bulletin, ask them to share a copy (mail, online) so we can take a look at it.
We hope to gather documents and ideas over the next month so we can explore ways to express who we are as a faith community through our weekly worship bulletin. Documents and accompanying notes may be left in the church office (MoFF mailbox is behind the receptionist desk). Thanks for your good ideas and for remembering MoFF during your summer travels!

Since a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, killing 26 people, 20 of them children; 1,186 people in Cuyahoga County have been killed by guns. Since last month, 16 more individuals have died by gun violence in Cuyahoga County. The names of those at least 18 years of age are:
Emanuel John Dennis Golden Jr., Tavion Mante Hollins, Justin Andrew Borra, Ronald James Evans Jr., Christopher Andrew Rago, Dustin M. Ramos, Sharema Denise Hale, Jerry Johnson, Takeyra Collins, Joseph King III, Layzchon Lee-Devon Bradley, Steven P. Myers, Chrystal Mahlar, Joseph
Allen Watson Jr., and Alexander F. Royes Jr. Six of those who died were by suicide and one victim was under eighteen.
Believing God calls us to be peacemakers, by Session action, each month we pray for people affected by gun violence and address the evil of gun violence in our nation, marked by the tolling of the tower bell. Join us in this time of increased concern over deadly gun violence in our county, our country, and the world, in remembering and praying that God will show us the way to a new commitment to Peace on Earth. God Before Guns, a multi-faith coalition of individuals and faith communities created in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary. Go

Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and a friend.and enjoy a picnic. Free Parking. A tour of the tower is available following the Friday concert and the Tower is open on Sunday morning during the concert..
During July and August, the Friday Lunchtime Carillon Concert will be repeated on Sunday morning rain or shine at 11. Look for programs at the refreshments table. The tower will be open to visitors. These concerts are presented by the Friends of the McGaffin Carillon through a grant from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.
Patrick Macoska
Native Clevelander Patrick Macoska has lived in Michigan until recently, where he had careers in architecture and church music. He studied carillon at the University of Michigan and played his GCNA (Guild of Carillonneurs in North America) advancement recital in 1997 at the University of Kansas. Patrick has been active in the Guild, serving two terms on the Board of Directors and currently serving as Chairperson of the Examinations Committee. He has given carillon concerts throughout the U.S. and Canada, most recently playing guest recitals at the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and at L’Oratoire St. Joseph in Montreal. Until his move back to Cleveland, he played weekly recitals on the two carillons at the University of Michigan as well as on the 51 bell Paccard carillon at St. Mary’s of Redford Church in Detroit, where he served as director of music. He is happy to be back in his home town and looks forward to becoming involved in the Cleveland carillon scene!

Traffic Alert for MLK Drive:
Construction on I-90 exit ramps at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive starts July 29
The Ohio Department of Transportation will begin work July 29 on both the eastbound and westbound exit ramps from I-90 to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (Exit 177). Traffic on both exit ramps will be maintained. All lanes on ramps will remain open, and traffic will be shifted with construction. There will be overnight ramp closures (between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.) toward the end of the project for paving work.
Delays at the exit ramps are expected during construction. Motorists are encouraged to take the East 72nd Street exit from I-90 (Exit 175) during peak commute times to avoid delay.
