“Praise be You, my Lord, through our sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us."
St. Francis of Assisi

“God gave us eyes
to see the beauty
in nature and hearts
to see the beauty
in each other. "

A Cleansing Breath for the Spirit
These times are overwhelming. With so much swirling around us, so many worrisome headlines, it's easy to lose hope or to become consumed with worry. While we all take care to stay healthy in these uncertain times, we can't forget to also care for our collective spirit. Let's remain buoyed in our faith as witnesses to God's handiwork and be reminded that, as seen in this video, there is still so much beauty to behold.

One-on-One with Our Sisters
As we endure the COVID-19 pandemic, our Sisters ponder things that may never return to the way they were, but rather be part of a new normal.
A Time of Caution & Care
"I think we must all be part of a new normal, since this virus doesn't seem to be going away very quickly! Not only now during the pandemic, but at all times, we must use proper and good hygiene no matter where we are. We are pilgrims on the journey and must take care and respect all of creation. Pope Francis stresses the care of creation in Laudato Si' continuously, and we each have an obligation to care for Mother Earth and all of God's people in whatever way we can. This is a very important part of our Franciscan heritage and spirituality, and I invite all to take heed and to 'do what is ours to do!'"

Beauty at San Damiano
Friendship and faith collided recently as members of the Forest Hills Late Bloomers Garden Club dug deep to beautify the grounds of our San Damiano Convent in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Jubiliarian Spotlight
Join us in congratulating our 2020 Jubilarians as they celebrate milestones in religious life amid this year's extraordinary circumstances. Today, meet Sister Jo Goolish, who marks her 60th Jubilee.
Sister Dorothy Bucko recalls special summer days of old spent at the shore. "My Mother, sister and I always looked forward to spending the summer in Wildwood, N.J., walking the boardwalk and 'special meals.'" Sister says. "Because my father worked at Bethlehem Steel, he had to come on weekends to be with us. He left us on Sunday and then returned the following weekend. We enjoyed the beach, walking in the sand, picking up seashells and jumping in the waves. When he was there on weekends, my father would take me far out into the water. After our evening meal, we would walk around on the boardwalk to go for ice cream. I enjoyed this time each summer."
Franciscan Backyard Capers
Sister Lorita Kristufek reminds us to take stock of God's creations as she delights
in the wonders of nature on the grounds of Mt. Assisi Place in Pittsburgh, Pa.
It’s been a different three months with a pandemic looming round, time to stop and slow down, a new awareness all around. But let’s stop and see a message that we often fail to see our creature friends in nature, as they caper fancy free.

We have a family that’s moved in, with bunnies, birds and deer. They think they own the property and scamper without fear. The squirrels, you know, they persevere, in snatching what they want. They’ll stare you down and jump and play to get the food up front!

They’re frisky chaps with skillful moves, at our birdhouse feeding ground. With classic maneuvers, outsmarting birds, you wonder without a sound? I know they eye our occasional glance and sense our window peeking. But without a doubt they do their thing, cautiously hiding-and-seeking!

Western PA birds appear, so lovely in their making. But work they must to get their share of bird seed for the taking. While nearby simple bunnies come a'looking and a’munching, on fresh-cut grass and seeds galore, a feast so great for lunching!

And then the deer so swiftly prance, then rest with calm while eating, their careful watch and upright glance sense humans may be meeting! So up they flee and journey on, across Mt. Assisi places, to find more food and resting ground in other familiar spaces.

So, you see it’s been delightful, to glance at backyard capers and watch with silent stillness, at such entertainment makers. For creature friends I thank you, God, Your steadfast love abounds. And thanks for Franciscan showtime here on Mt. Assisi grounds!

Photo: God's creatures are at work in San Antonio, Texas too, where a baby blue jay joined in the outdoor evening prayers of Sisters Jo Goolish and Yolanda Escamilla.
