WELCOME TO RUTIZ FARMS
Lots of nice summer fruits at the farm stand now:
Our own raspberries, blackberries,  sugar cube and Arava melons. and a few strawberries.
Green and red seedless grapes, yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines and plums from Island Farms in Kingsburg.
White peaches, red and green pears and apples from Cirone Farms in See Canyon.

Fall is just around the corner...and our pumpkin plants have set some nice pumpkins, that are now ready for "engraving"....so come pick out your pumpkin and write your name on the skin. Then come back in October and get your fully grown pumpkin with your name etched on the outside! The pumpkins are "ripe" for writing ...be sure to come by the farm starting this Saturday, August 17 and continuing though the following week during our regular stand hours. 
In the past years, we have found that when children are allowed to do the engraving themselves, the results are quite often not so good and the pumpkins will usually rot or are deemed "undesirable" when October comes around. This year we ask that only adults do the actual writing on the pumpkins. We know the kids like to do the engraving, but we have a limited amount of pumpkins in the field, and we would like to give each family an opportunity to have one or two nice pumpkins.  Stop by the farm stand first to get directions to the pumpkin field and to pick up the engraving pens, marking stakes and yellow stickers that will identify your pumpkin.
You pay for the pumpkins in October, when you take them home with you.

Our raspberry field is now open for u-pickers...the field is located inside our "hoop houses" ( those greenhouse structures located on the west side of our farm).  It is a 4 minute walk from our parking lot...but well worth it if you are into raspberries.  Prepare for warm temperatures inside the hoop houses during the middle of the day.  Please follow the instructions at the field as to which rows to pick in .  The price is $5/ pound, which is about 1/2 the regular price of $3.50/ basket for already picked raspberries at our farm stand.
Bring your own containers to pick into or use our baskets and boxes.  The u-pick is available during our regular farm stand hours...Tuesday thru Friday, noon to 6 and Saturday, 10 to 4.

This Friday, August 16, we will be cooking up our Shishito peppers at the farm stand and giving out free samples...so everyone can see how easy these peppers are to prepare           (using only a fry pan and a little oil ) and how delicious they can be.

WHAT'S IN THE HARVEST BOX THIS WEEK
Grown on our farm using organic farming
methods: broccoli, squash, tomatoes, beans, cauliflower, raspberries, cucumbers, onions, celery, peppers and carrots.

Shishito peppers are great roasted or sauteed.  You can grill or cook in a frying pan.  We slice them up very thin, saute in some olive oil and add to our salad, also just throw them whole on the bbq or in a fry pan with a little olive oil, and roast until the skin darkens, eat as a side dish.  They are neither spicy or sweet, just delicious for what they are!

A simple and delicious way to prepare the  zucchini  squash. .cut the squash lengthwise into stripes about 1/4 inch thick, cover with a little olive oil and  seasonings, put them on a hot bar-b-q grill or under a broiler for 5 to 10 minutes on each side until brown and crispy

Heather and John Teixeira bring their locally raised beef cuts to our stand every 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month.  Sarah and Ryan from Beewench Farms brings their frozen chickens every 2nd and 4th Friday.
Almond Brittle from Paso Almonds of SLO...freshly made each week by Rusty and his crew.
Bone Broth made with BeeWench chicken bones and organic vegetables. 
Sierra High brand Lavender and White Sage essential oils.

Vegetable and herb starts from The Transitions Mental Health Growing Grounds of Santa Maria...pesticide free!  
   
We have two great beekeepers that bring their honey to our stand...Alisha Taft from the Rock Front Ranch near Cuyama  brings her sage and wildflower honeys and David's Blue Ribbon Honey ( and bee pollen ) from the Arroyo Grande area.

You are welcome to come by and pick out individual items from the table or continue to pick up your reserved Harvest box or both( add items that may not be included in your Box that week)..The Harvest Boxes, which cost $20 / week , will be available for pick up during the Stand hours on Fridays only. I would ask you to kindly let me know by Thursday evening of each week, with a E mail response( use the link in the right hand column of this newsletter where it says  Order Your Harvest Box)  if you want a Box for the week.    Please take note:  this ordering link is only usable for the current week's newsletter....After Friday morning of each week, the ordering link becomes unusable!
