Yesterday, we celebrated our annual Convocation and welcomed our entire staff back to school. It was a great celebration of One Heart. One Lovejoy.
Our students return to school on Monday, and I cannot wait!

Our communication plan includes a monthly update regarding Board meetings. Following each meeting of the Board of Trustees, I will share a recap of the evening’s events. Below you will find the August 12, 2019 Board Brief.

We begin each board meeting with a board dinner which includes the Board of Trustees and the Cabinet. The Lovejoy ISD School Board Members in attendance last night were:
Chad Collins, President
Amy Smith, Vice-President

Board Member Matt Gournay joined us for Convocation, but was unable to join us for the Board meeting due to a recent surgery. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Board Member Scott Christiansen was not in attendance as he submitted his resignation. We are thankful for Scott’s service to Lovejoy and wish him the very best.
Together with the Board, we are the Team of Eight.

Following the Board Dinner, we move into Executive Session which is a time where limited issues such as personnel actions may be discussed. No votes are taken in executive session.
The formal Board meeting began at 7:03 PM with an invocation by Board Vice-President Amy Smith.
Chris Mayfield, Principal of Lovejoy High School, introduced Director of Bands, Paul Heuer. The Lovejoy High School Band was recognized for their TMEA 7th Place Texas Honor Band finish.

Chad Collins, Board President, thanked Board Member Scott Christiansen for his service to the Lovejoy ISD Board of Trustees. The Board will present Mr. Christiansen with a water color of the Red School House.
The Board considered and accepted the resignation of Scott Christiansen, Position 7, Lovejoy ISD Board of Trustees.

I had the very good fortune of presenting the Silver Star Award to Josh Strickland. The Silver Star is a distinction awarded to alumna of Lovejoy High School who return to the district as educators.

The Board of Trustees approved the new hires.
Each regular board meeting provides an opportunity for public comments. We did not have any public comments last night.
The Board approved the consent agenda which included:
- Approval of the minutes of the July 17, 2019 Board Meeting
- Approval of Quarterly Investment Report
- Approval of 2019-2020 District Teacher Appraisal Calendar
- Approval of District of Innovation Teacher Certifications
- Approval of Student Code of Conduct
- Approval of Policy Update 112 Affecting Local Policies
- Approval of Policy Update 113 Affecting Local Policies
- Notification of Purchases Over $50,000
- Notification of Resignations

Brie Smith, Director of Advanced Academics presented an update on Advanced Placement results. Her presentation may be found

The Board of Trustees adopted the reduced 2019-2020 amended tax rate, per HB 3. You may click
here to view the document.
The Board of Trustees considered the options to fill the Position 7 vacancy on the Board of Trustees. Board President Chad Collins explained the differences between a special election and an appointment. The Board voted to proceed with the appointment option through an application and interview process. Should the person selected to fill the Position 7 vacancy through an appointment be interested in continuing service on the Board, they will be required to run for election in May 2020 and again in May 2021.
I presented the Superintendent’s report which included an update on summer activities in curriculum and instruction, operations, finance, special services and the superintendent’s office. Additionally, a list of upcoming events was shared.
